Selling my Butterfly Labs BitForce 5 GH/s SC (aka Jalapeno) ASIC miner.

It has been reliably cranking out about 5 and a half GH/s at about 35 watts for
two weeks now; I'm selling it just so I have one less thing in my life to think about.

I paid 25.9 BTC for it; best offer over 26 BTC before 16:00 UTC Sunday, 9 June gets it.
I'll ship it UPS/USPS/Fedex on the 10'th or 11'th, you must pay shipping (e.g. if you
want it overnight, add shipping charges from Amherst, MA 01002 to your payment).

PGP signed version of the above, so you know this is really me and not a scammer who managed to hack my forum account:

Yeah, 26 BTC is a bit steep. But it is Gavin's Jalapeno, so it could be a sought after collector's item once... Wink

Normally I wouldn't respond, but this disturbs me too much.

Pre-order customers, back on the very first day these things were available for order (June 23, 2012), paid exactly $149 plus shipping. The BTC exchange rate on that day was about $6.50/BTC. So for those paying the equivalent in BTC it would have been around 25.9 BTC.

Today BTC is not worth $6.50, it is worth $120. So what you paid in today's equivalent is 1.4 BTC. And you are asking 26BTC/$3120 for it?? This is nothing more than price gouging. I have always respected your contributions to bitcoin, but asking $3120 is a low blow indeed. I would not have expected this level of greed from you; I would expect you to be above this. And to throw salt on the wound, you are asking the buyer to pay shipping on top of that ridiculous amount. Is this really you, Gavin?

You are essentially asking $3120 for a device you paid $160 for. A device which people can order today for $274 directly from BFL. Yes, a new unit ordered today will not get delivered for 2 or 3 months, but clearly the $3000 'premium' will never be recovered in that timeframe. What disappoints me is that you are aware of all this.

Today BTC is not worth $6.50, it is worth $120. So what you paid in today's equivalent is 1.6 BTC. And you are asking $3120 for it?? This is nothing more than price gouging. I have always respected your contributions to bitcoin, but asking $3120 is a low blow indeed. I would not have expected this level of greed from you. Actually, he isn't asking for $3120, he's asking for 26 bitcoins. He gave away 26 bitcoins and he would like to get back 26 bitcoins.
So I don't see a problem here.

But I doubt that someone's going to pay him 26 BTC for a device like this.

Your argument is idealistic, but does not reflect reality.

If Gavin had asked BFL for a refund he would not get his 26 BTC back; he would get $149 (plus shipping). BFL products are not priced in BTC; they are priced in USD. Gavin's 26 BTC was converted immediately to USD the moment he placed his order a year ago. That's just how it is, as the many BFL customers who requested (and received) refunds over the past several months can attest.

If today's BTC value was $0.01 instead of $120, do you think Gavin would still be selling for his 'original purchase price' of 26 BTC? If it isn't clear, this was a rhetorical question.

In any case, I have no intention or desire to continue a conversation here on this topic; there is no point to it. Readers can either agree or disagree with what I have stated; it doesn't matter. I respect that it is Gavin's business what he wants to sell his device for. And if someone wants to buy it for 26 BTC that's equally fine. It just struck me (in a bad way) when I stumbled across this thread and read the OT post. I've had my say, and now I'll move on.

I'll make an offer of ฿0.98. My basis is that $150 = ~฿1.4, and since you opened the box, it lost 30+% of it's value.

Well, I'll make an offer of 8 BTC

I am being generous with the difficulty estimating to even achieve that much.

It's really difficult to plan for more than 1 month ROI these days.

Are you guys really hating on Gavin for selling his miner at the going rate?  I mean I've had numerous higher bids than 26 BTC for my Jalapeno and Im a nobody...

If you dont like this price you can get in line at BFL  Roll Eyes

If it is the going rate it will sell. Free market for the win.

Just so you know Goat, your bid was not assholish at all, it was directed at most of the posters above you.

So, if I get my single in a few weeks I can sell it for 312BTC?  Shocked

I think Goat's bid is more than fair and would hope no one is crazy enough to spend much more.

I think the price has merit, if he paid in bit coin he can sell in bitcoin, maybe a bit less since it is used. Maybe 20BTC. If that includes the shipping i suppose it's ok.

So far I haven't done any mining because it has a rip off gold rush feel to it.  Grin The rigs you can buy eat too much power and are now too slow. The rigs you want are unavailable but you can get in line for a pre order. If you want to take the chance.

I'm sure he will find someone on ebay to sell that BFL to.  I've seen em go for that type of money.   For that price I can buy almost 12 of them from BFL direct. Of course it will take 6 months to forever.  Roll Eyes

I wonder how many coins can be mined with it in one or 2 weeks?

That's more than I expected for one of those little things.

Knowing what you know now would you buy more from them? Or maybe move up to 50 GHZ/sec?
