Came across a site, which tried to upload Trojan to my PC. It turned out it was using my capacities for mining while I was at the site. What do you know about such sites? Do they do any harm to PCs? And is it profitable to mine by such means?

Websites are trying to push mining as a money source but most users pcs wont be profitable on some coins. Plus in sone countries its classified as theft and if caught could result in jail time. So sketchy websites do it to provide income since they dont care about jailtime. Kind of like pirate bay but i do not think even with their traffic its profitable enough to do it. Its cents per machine like I said, jail time and wrecks computers in some cases. Dont be a scummy human being please. Vote no to internet browser mining. Respect people and make it a choice instead of a donation.

Now not all the cloud sites contains the malware's in it. If they have many advertising on the pages you can understand they are too much money concerned site so they will give errors in using the site or payment won't be proper for the miners you have invested there to buy the hash powers from the network pools.

Most websites use Javascript to load an altcoin mining script on the browser that can be used to mine various coins, usually XMR. Adblock can stop this. No website or plugin actually mines Bitcoin, so I would suggest moving this thread to the Altcoin Mining section.

It's actually profitable which is why they do it. The majority of people use ad-blocking software and that substantially reduces a website's earnings so it's a given that they'd look for alternative methods to capitalize on their traffic and browser mining seems to be the trend now.

In the case of the pirate bay, many people who have serious gaming rigs, thus mining quite well, visit the website to pirate games. However it's not harmful to the hardware due to the inefficiency caused by the browser's and JavaScript's overhead.

Large website pushed this type of advertising which is I guess a harmful to some computers while browsing the site.
Coinhive is one of this advertising platform that has JavaScript miner. So adblockers can block this stupid ad, like leowonderful said most adblockers blocked javascript ads which is right...

Totaly not relevant to what the OP is talking about. He is talking about something like coinhive. Website owner install a code to his site and when someone visits the site his computer is used to mine Monero. Antivirus may consider the site as infected with a virus. Good way to say bye bye to your traffic in my opinion. So it is not about cloud mining sites in any way.

Sometimes you get a warning by your virus scanner, when you are mining with your hardware and you needn't care about.
But in your case, as I read it, they want to harm your PC or cheat you in another way. F.e. they say, you get 1 BTC but must first pay the transactions fee. Be careful. Look at contacts, FAQ and ask here with the name of the service, so that we can give you more detailed advices.

In-browser mining is rapidly becoming one of the most popular ways to monetize web traffic. According to a recent report by Adguard, around 500 million users are unaware that they are mining cryptos. Around 220 of top 100K websites are using browser mining scripts. Most of these sites have a shady reputation, TV and video sites, Torrent trackers and porn websites.

Yeah, It is profitable for websites with heavy traffic.

Quote
How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over US $43,000. Again, right now it’s not millions, but this money has been made in three weeks at almost zero cost.

Some users might prefer in-browser mining over annoying and dodgy ads, but it's unethical to make use of visitor's CPU resources without their consent. There is also the risk of your system getting infected. This trend is just catching up so better to use adblockers or Chrome extensions like No Coin or minerBlock.

Its not Trojan virus. Its actually the mining software. Some antivirus detects it as virus. its actually a javascript developed by coinhive to mine monero. Nowadays many sites and even adnetworks uses this in their banners. It wont harm your pc because you are not going to open and keep the site whole day, right? But when you visit the site , it will utilize your cpu power to mine coins for the webmaster and you will feel your site is lagging.

I dont see it as a negative thing, i prefer this way because websites are getting revenue only by website mining instead of putting thousands of ads that are pure garbage.
If there is a website that i use to visit everyday, then i would prefer to have an opened mining client on my computer instead of having a headacche because of those crap ads.
It is better for me, and websites are making better revenue from this.

The website is probably earning less than their ads, while their users see an increase in their CPU usage, making them stop visiting the website. Plus, if you want to do that with your website, at least write a warning or let users choose if they want to contribute, instead of hiding that from the regular user.

I don't mind ThePirateBay do that, for example. Meanwhile, there are websites that are pure garbage and are starting to use ads + web miners to milk their users - which don't deserve anything from me.

From the source posted by krishnapramod above: the majority of websites using web miners belong to the TV/Movies category. Imagine a user that don't know anything about cryptocurrencies, start marathoning his tv show for more than 4 hours, without knowing that his CPU is being used to mine Monero... That's just shady.

I have read something the same and it was with piratebay that are mining with monero. And there are some extension for browsers that whenever someone uses the PC they'll automatically using your time and processor to mine. What is that website that you used to mine with your capacity without noticing it? They not really harming your PC but they are only using you, your PC, your power for free money only for them.

Honestly not a good idea it will be also affected their site if they didn't let other people know about the site and it can be tag by google as infected website. that can affect the site rankings in any serps..
And i already test this giving to someone browser mining honestly it can gives you earnings but its too little than advertising adsense or promoting offers..    There are some adnetwork that actually can gives you a good conversation if you are using only the ads from bitcoin related they are paying small amount base on what i experience compare to the big adnetworks..
So i suggest not to use a browser miner just to get benefits for  traffic because  google was changes their algorithm that can affect their website.. and treat their website as virus infected..

I'm not quite sure I agree with just doing it as soon as the page is loaded, but you've got to admit, publishers/website operators are starting to run out of viable methods to make money with their websites. Most of them aren't even making money, they're just trying to break even with their hosting costs. I can see where these people are coming from.

Of course the problem with making something like this opt-in is that a lot of people will never opt-in, and they'd never see nearly as much money as they would if they just put it live on the site for everyone. I've seen one website I use add it as a donation option, simply turning on the miner (as simple as clicking a button) and letting it run with the tab open in the background. They offer their users perks for leaving it open, so as to provide incentive, just like donations to the site.

I think this, in addition to things like Basic Attention Token are really going to start to change how people monetize their websites. I'm really hoping that with more things like this in the future we'll start to see less of the shitty, malware-infested ads we have now and we'll get a more sensible ad environment for everyone.

They use your CPU power to mine when you surf their website. Probably uses java script to run it. Never encountered a site where they use your cpu resources to mine without your permission, but I do know about a site where you can mine using your browser.
They will just generate few cents but if the site has huge traffic those few cents adds up to thousands.

This is like that browser mining that freebitco.in and few website are offering? But seems like these websites are doing it without the user's consent. Such websites should be tagged so that the users can take necessary precautions to avoid this.

I see this more and more often, the first case that I heard about was the piratebay, but in my opinion this is completely dishonest, one thing is that they try to force you to look at their ads, that is fine, because those ads are on their side, so they can do whatever they want in their web page, but the fact they are taking control of the resources of your computer and you are the one spending additional electricity and the life of your hardware diminishes because of it, seem very fishy to me, what it is stopping them from hacking you and steal your money.

You're right! The antivirus blocked an uploading of coinhive.com/lib/coinhive.min.js. And detected as a Trojan. The most ridiculous thing is that it all happened on an online-shop site. Thank you!

If they have many advertising on the pages you can understand they are too much money concerned site so they will give errors in using the site or payment won't be proper for the miners you have invested there to buy the hash powers from the network pools.
Its not cloud mining sites actually. They are programs developed by programmers through which they are able to mine crytpos through users' CPUs.
Its referred to as browser mining and a legit browser mining could be found on freebitco.in . An article was published regarding such activities taking place on half a billion people's PCs without them knowing about it.
