The violence of Spanish government towards the Catalonians was insane. No denying. But I'm really stuck at the announcement of the Catalonian president. Is it just a temporary stopover or will Catalonia remain a part of Spain?

It seems as though the violence from the Spanish govt has really shifted Catalonian opinion towards independence. I don’t live there but will be watching closely. Hope more violence doesn’t follow!

That's just ridiculous how the government provoke all the mess themselves. Can't believe they were that improvident to make such a foolish mistakes

I don't think it will turn out well because California doesn't have resources like oil and electricity being taken from other states.

Well, it seems a lot of Catalonians what to remain, or at least have more dialogues for a better deal. But seriously, how serious would this be for Spain? Would all the other component provinces end up separating as well? And how "self-sufficient" are these regions? Seems Italy also have movements like this. Surprising that it's the countries that are not economically well-off that are having these.

Although I kind of doubt a split will happen, I do hope that Catalonia secedes and becomes self-sufficient and economically prosperous. The Spanish government is incompetent and the economy is complete shit; hopefully this will incite some changes.

These secessionists can do whatever they damn please and with the California path to independence, its not going to happen at all, None of the people there are original Californians, they don't own the land, We all know that the land belongs to the native Indians.

I do not see there being a split from Spain anytime soon, at best the president of Catalonia (I won't attempt to spell his name) will try and use this is a spring board to try and hold a referendum which is actually acknowledged and recognised by Spain.

Might might not make what's right, but might makes what happens. That's why native Indians don't own the land like they might have at one time. However, the native Indians, by their own culture, never attempted to own any land. So, they don't have anything to do with it.

In addition, if they had ever owned the land, there are court rules that they actually could use to get it back. That's why they only win when they attempt to secure their reservations. Before reservations they didn't own any land, even though they could have.

The real test will come when Catalonia tries to mount its own army. Might might not make right, but it makes what happens.

it seems to me that Catalonia will not separate from Spain, since the majority of Catalans are against it, it will be very economically unprofitable, and will also contribute to the general separation. For example, Bayern has long been looking at the separation from Germany. But you need to understand separation and the proclamation of independence provides for exit from European Union.

You can never force someone to be part of your country. It is very clear that the vast majority of the Catalans want to secede from Spain, just like the other regions such as Basque Country and Galicia. If the Spaniards use force against these people, then it will make the situation even worse.

Well, here they are separated from Spain, and what's next? I heard that in this case large banks will leave Catalonia, and in Europe their independence will not be accepted. I think they will only lose from this referendum.

Catalonia refused all ultimatums, so we are waiting for either a tough conflict or the adoption of independence, the third is not given.

in the long term there has been so much pushback from the Spanish government that you can tell they are unlikely to completely give independence to Catalonia, at the same time, Catalonias have tried by far their best to gain independence and have the right to do so. Considering that this has been going on for decades, I think they'll come each year closer to independence, they are always pushing a little bit further and this time, it seems, Spain will have to grant them at least a bit more independence than they are comfortable to give them. In that trends continues sonner or later Catalonia might become really independet, but Europe itself will play hard on it, as Europe wants in general more integration and not less of it. So even if they do become independent, I think they'll be worsed off than before.

It is very difficult to speculate on whether it is right or not. I can not even guess what the future could be in Catalonia, if they secede from Spain. I don't think they would be better off.
