Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

This is why I worry about stupidly over-regulating bitcoin in the U.S. They simply can't kill bitcoin at this point. But they could drive bitcoin businesses out of the U.S. and help other nations reap the lion's share of the bitcoin economy.
The regulators just can't seem to keep their hands off things they don't understand. They are sure that if they cut the goose open they can have all the golden eggs at once.

America losing world currency status is inevitable, the only question is how long until it happens, and what replaces it.

The USA has gutted their manufacturing capacity, their overall GDP due to bad monetary policies, is swimming in debt that is truly frightening, and has vulnerable concerns all over the globe that could become a big mess back home if energy becomes an issue.

Its going to be an "interesting" next ten years, I can tell you that.

As an 'american' by birth (but an expat by choice) the prospect of China as a super-power with a controlling share of the world reserve currency enthralls me. I hold Bitcoins, I see this as a good thing.

Its a good thing for anyone outside of Washington.    USA will lose easy money but anyone doing useful trade will gain.  Politics and endless government waste will be cut most, anyone outside of that is better off even the average American eventually.   If Russia can survive their mess, USA will no matter what
