Obviously, I'm a newbie. I have an online wallet on an exchange and a web based wallet. I'd like to know if they are the same as MEW. Especially that I'd like to receive tokens and free coins on airdrops.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

If you want to receive an Ethereum based token, do not use any exchange as you cannot control the private key. Just use myetherwallet.

Myetherwallet is the best for you. You can use a address and private key from this wallet for both such as Ether and token. my special suggestion for you that, use only myetherwallet without any hesitation for secure your ether and tokens.

If you have the private keys for your wallet then you would insert them into the new wallet that you have for Ethereum. Request a back up if you don't have private keys.

You could accept any coin that uses Ethereum's Blockchain.
