Last night around 12:30am I finally got my Raspberry Pi + BFL Jalapeño to work together. This means I can run 24/7 using just 36 Watts of power. Also, now I can move this noisy (whirring fan) device into any room in the house that's accessible with an ethernet cable. Maybe I'll even put it in the chicken coop so it keeps the chickens warm? In any case, this is a huge jump since last month with my ATI GPU + Mac Pro I was mining at 55x slower speed while using 7x as much electricity. After yesterday's whopping 28% difficulty increase, 5.5GH/s earns .17BTC/day (approx $20). But at 36 Watts the power consumption is 11 cents per day, so this should continue to be profitable for some time yet. Or this will suddenly be a huge waste of time, money, and electricity if Bitcoin fails altogether... Well, from what I can tell if bitcoin fails all together you will still have a heat and white noise generator for the chicken coop Glass half full kind of thing

Awesome! Is the outside of that Jalapeno too hot to mount the Pi directly onto?

Looking good! I'm tempted to swap out the fan in the jalapeno for something else and trying a different power brick to see if I can get the power usage any lower.

Awesome! Is the outside of that Jalapeno too hot to mount the Pi directly onto? I think both devices would benefit from a little airspace. No sense in letting them heat each other up.

I'd recommend a 200-300 watt panel, a deep-cycle battery around 80-100 amp-hours, and a charge controller - this way it could run 24/7 only on solar power, worst case scenario that battery could run it for at least a full 24 hours.

Nice little setup there! If the noise is bothersome, it seems like a lot of people have had good results going with a quieter fan design. Might be worth investing $4 in a nice quiet fan, if only to up the 'awesomeness' factor, and keep from bothering the chickens.

I really want to do this... I have a Jally and a rPi that I'm going to set up, but I just can't justify spending the money on a solar setup when my electricity is dirt cheap anyways! Maybe.....

I have one of 155W for all the lightning in my house, with that low consupmtion a 125W panel at 7.5A and a 72AH battery, with 8 hours of sun a day you shoul keep that baby runing all day long with just solar energy. I can give you a table I made Calculos Sistema Solar sorry, it's in spanish.

This is really cool. If the need for an ethernet connection limits your available placement options, you might have success with a WiFi USB dongle - the Pi handles most without hassle if the power supply is sufficiently stable, but of course this would increase your power requirements a little bit. I don't know whether there is a software way of disabling the ethernet port, that might cut away a little bit of power consumption when you're only using WiFi.
