hi Smiley

quick question, with the upcoming fork, will i still get bitcoin gold if my btc is sitting on an exchange, or does it need to be in a downloaded wallet? i am seeing conflicting answers, i have been told by a friend they received their bitcoin cash to their bittrex.

many thanks

That all depends on the individual exchange... like with Bitcoin Cash, some exchanges did nothing, some created BCH wallets for users, some autoconverted BCH to BTC and credited BTC to users...

You will need to contact the support for the exchange and/or read their website/blog/twitter/facebook etc to see if they make any announcements regarding Bitcoin Gold. IMO, the SAFEST option, is to withdraw your BTC to a bitcoin wallet where you have access to the private keys, as there is no guarantee that your exchange will allow access to BTG.

TL;DR: If you have access to the private keys, you will be able to get your Bitcoin Gold

Wait for the announcement of the exchanges that you are using if they are not concern for the upcoming fork and did not response at all you probably should move your coins into your own wallet with private keys that you can hold privately, if you want to make it sure you will not miss the bitcoin gold just move your bitcoin to offline wallets.

I suggest you to withdraw the bitcoin that you have in exchange to your wallet prior to the fork. There are many exchanges and they will often say they will support bitcoin gold in future and so you might feel safe to keep your money there. However to be safe if you dont want your free bitcoin gold wasted then its better to withdraw it all to your wallet. After all every exchange tries to make money from its users mistakes and you dont want to fall prey of that.

There's quite a bit of discussion on this forum but if you want a reliable quick guide, head on over to the horse's mouth at http://btcgpu.org/

On the landing page, if you scroll down, you'll find a list of wallets supporting Bitcoin Gold or BCG as they're calling it. There are also a few exchanges on that list that have committed to crediting equal amounts of BCG for BTC balances. The latter required you to trust the exchange... I'd say HitBTC is the most reliable on that list, but don't take my word for it.

Read their FAQ for more info.

Any update on Electrum on whether or not they are going to support BitcoinGold?

I know that their servers are run by individuals, so i'm thinking there is a good chance one of them will host one for bitcoinGold right?

If they don't Ill should move my private keys into a wallet that is supported by their official site, so for example "https://guarda.co/?utm_source=btg" <- Wallet seems pretty funky to me :/

It is possible you will get your BTG from a exchanger.
But there is also the possibility they just wont. The only way to ensure you are really going to get your BTG is to be in control of your private keys.
Since a web wallet only provides you an account on their site with BTC value to spend.
If they want to keep their BTG's, they dont have to give it to you.

Thankyou for the replies everyone and the link buwaytress, i cannot see the list of exchanges though, have they released it yet?

They also say they will be releasing documentation for receiving to wallets as well so maybe its still being worked on, interesting that they say the gold will actually hit ALL exchanges but legally they don't have to give it to their users, and to move your btc to a wallet more so for safety of definitely getting it

Some of the stock exchange sites announced that they would give their customers btc gold. There are more detailed information in the announcement sections of the stock exchange sites, and some stock market sites have informed the customers about this issue by sending an email.
