Title says it all. Interested in using something like this as a hedge on mining hardware costs.

I sell Bhut Jolokia "Ghost" Chili seeds and other hot pepper seeds for BTC. PM me for details.

Neither of these are tools to short BTC directly, but I'll mention them anyway, since you specifically mention a desire to "hedge" mining hardware costs:

  •   There are "mining difficulty futures" sold on Bitfunder that pay out proportionally to the mining difficulty on their payout date.  Lookup CoinBr.iDiff-O and CoinBr.iDiff-E.
  •   Just launched today on BTCT.co, there is DMS.SELLING, a fairly complex instrument that also should operate as a hedge against rising difficulty.

Both are somewhat complicated instruments; make sure you understand what you are buying before leaping in.

I've thought of offering CFDs that would be created and priced specifically for individual miners but wasn't sure if there would be enough interest for me to sink the inordinate amount of time it would require to start.

Yeah, but the spread is ridiculous and the interface is very primitive.
I think there is really a huge opportunity for someone to start a proper futures exchange. I wish I had the time and resources to do it.

My only concern is someone who is insuring put options would need some sort of safeguard in the event of collapse. I don't see what they own that satisfies this need. What is the point of insurance if the insurer can not pay when needed.
