What is an Oracle?

Oracles are the delivery mechanism that allows external data to be entered into deterministic smart contracts. Without oracles, smart contracts are only able to use information that is stored directly on the blockchain.

ZAP bonding occurs via the oracle smart contract. Prior to bonding their ZAP tokens to an oracle, users will be able to see exactly how many dots they will receive as a result. Users can choose to produce as many dots as they are able to afford based on the predetermined price curve. There is no limit for how
many times ZAP may be bonded to produce dots.

Zap is the marketplace where you can use oracles to empower smart contracts and modify it from the real world events.
On the Zap platform, you can purchase oracles that suit your smart contract needs. This payment is done through Zap token. Only oracles can be purchased/sold on the marketplace.

Founder Nick Spanos has been meeting with top executives at large companies, visiting tech entrepreneurs and speaking at conferences throughout oil producing countries of the Middle East.

Our most important takeaway from this trip is from when Nick was hosted at the offices of Aramco, the Saudi oil giant. Nick spoke with high-ranking executives about EnergyLedger, Zap, and leveraging blockchain technology in the oil sector. By using industry language that these oil executives can understand, the cost-cutting potential of smart contracts, oracles, and Zap became very clear.

Every holder of Zap tokens can use the tokens to access and monetize data feeds (oracles) within Zap network.

There are two types of oracles: consensus and deterministic.
 
Consensus oracles rely on agreement amongst nodes, essentially vote on whether an event occurs, meaning that they can only determine whether something happens after the fact.

Deterministic oracles are essentially data feeds that are integrated into smart contracts. They are able to verify data and sign transactions for smart contracts in real time. Simply put, deterministic oracles are not much more than data feeds that are connected to smart contracts in order to determine outcomes. These are advantageous in that they are able to use the information that is provided by others, and execute smart contracts quickly using their information.
