If anyone has any tips about what I should do to possibly catch the thief or retrieve the Bitcoin it would be very much appreciated although I doubt there is much I can do.

Yeah, there is not much that you can do, unfortunately. Bitcoin transactions are irreversible and anonymous to some extent. It seems that your stolen Bitcoin ended in 1NbNo6vydErMzwX1XmvWcVYQPg7qoigMpu via https://blockchain.info/tx/97ffd042ab9cb8fa4b46b0d5a54f6394983c38593ddce5a18538e9e333eab1d8

The transaction consisted from 3 inputs as you can see. Perhaps you could do further investigation on all address linked in that transaction. Or you could ask an expert to investigate it further, although I don't think it will worth the effort. I'm not a blockchain analysis expert so can't do much sorry.

I have no idea how they got at the wallet and it's pretty disappointing for them all Sad
Your only chance to get it back, is if it's stolen by someone you know. Which wallet did you use, and who had access to it (or your PC)?

It's weird to steal Bitcoins with a low fee, most attackers use a very high fee so it doesn't take 3 hours to confirm.

I also wonder why you've been sending the full balance back and forth to and from that same address several times: did you by any chance export the private key into a Bitcoin Cash wallet, and then reuse the same address for Bitcoin?

really sucks. How could this happen in the first place? As you've said you were keeping the money on their behalf, which mean you probably were keeping the private key as well, did you lose the private key or how otherwise was the wallet emptied? Did you kids have access to the wallet as well, because even if they did, being five doesn't really strike me like an age where someone can figure out how to transfer BTC to anywhere.. they wouldn't even be able to open the wallet. It's really up to you that the amount has been stolen, you were responsible for it and somehow the private key was compromised. Be sure to follow best practices when storing your BTC next time, having a hard wallet or paper wallet is the best way to product your funds.

Hi all,

Just venting really.  My 5 kids put some pocket money into Bitcoin a few years ago which gave them a balance of 0.79BTC.  I've been keeping it for them all this time and it's grown to a good return but this morning I find the wallet was emptied last Tuesday.

By keeping do you mean trading? This 0.79 came back from an exchange not long before it was stolen.
17A16QmavnUfCW11DAApiJxp7ARnxN5pGX is the exchange's address.

A smart person who wanted to keep coins safe would put them on a new address let them lie there until needed. You were shuffling the money instead.

You were reusing the same address for some time. There were transactions from 2013 in there. Such an old address can be vulnerable and shouldn't be used to store money, only to receive and forward and even that can be risky.
Did someone clean your other addresses from the same wallet?

There is lots of activity on that address beofre the so called theft accorded. What's your angle here huh?  Peopoe that won't help give good info bit done dodgey description of what happened.

I'm not a professional, but the only option is to browse all the links and exchanges for the last time, but unfortunately bitcoin has it to itself that in part is anonymous.

It's possible that one of them gave the 12 word seed to someone but if you have the chance to just buy larger amounts then do that because of the way you've seen the price perform since adding to the wallet.

Tips?

We need more details. What wallet was it sitting in? What security measures did you have in place? What online interactions did you have immediately preceding the theft?

As for catching the thief, did you have any enemies that knew about your stash?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. These sorts of stories always surprise me.

You're much better off trying to find out how it happened so it doesn't happen again. It's going to be nearly impossible to retrieve your coins after all. You might as well exert your effort into making sure your computer isn't compromised or that someone else doesn't have your info.

Probably someone who has access to your PC (or email, because if accessed from other device an email is received to authorize the transaction) should have done it.

I always say to beginners that you should not start your business if you do not have adequate protection. In that case, it is pointless, because we can lose everything we have in a few seconds.

This is disappointing. Well I work as an IT personnel, I think what you can do is to track down the ip address of the last transaction made by that wallet. I’m pretty sure your wallet has that feature. Hope this helps.

If there is no record of the entire history and moment of approval of the transaction and does not know who potentially has access to his data, he is impotent.
