How to keep the crypt?? ???

Hello! There is a problem of saving and transferring funds. My friend mined bitcoins just for fun in 2012. They left them and have forgotten but after the boom, they tried to access their wallets to get bitcoins, but the keys were lost. There were not too many but to lose 10 000$ - 15 000$ is hard to accept. Does anyone know what are the ways to restore or save keys?
