We have heard the term 'mainstream' every now and then in connection with Bitcoin and cryptocurrency for that matter. It has been a very good topic in this forum and even in social media. Apparently, Bitcoin has not yet been considered to have passed the mainstream status all because only a certain percentage of the population have heard about it and got into it...even with the continuing coverage of the mainstream media and some famous personalities also getting into Bitcoin and even endorsing its adoption.

Now, am wondering, when can we say that Bitcoin is already part of the mainstream? Should we require a billion people to be holders of the coin? Or maybe the value of Bitcoin to have surpassed that of Facebook or Google? Or would it be the whole of your neighborhood already have some Bitcoin in their wallet app?

Please share the kind of scenario you think must happen before we can say that Bitcoin is now part and parcel of the mainstream population...

If you want bitcoin to be in the mainstream it will definitely need lots of publicity and popularity from a whole lot of users. Endorsements from well known people or groups and companies will definitely help bitcoin increase its status.

I believe Bitcoin can become mainstream once a couple more major events happen where people lose more faith in fiat money and end up looking for alternatives like BTC.

We need higher market cap. Price is changing too much at this point in order for btc to be adopted widely. No one wants to use currency that is chanign rapidly every few minutes for small transactions.

Mainstream is something that sneaks up on you. And before it's declared mainstream the world needs to decide what it wants Bitcoin to be.

I think the most likely outcome will be some sort of savings vehicle in which case it'll have to be available to retail investors through normal channels. It's a long way from that yet.

It is far from being mainstream. It can be once it fulfills a few conditions. Bitcoin needs to be accessible for everyone, high tech and non tech users, need to be accessible to any country even the poorest one which is not that accessible right now. It need to show that the times when bitcoin are stolen it is 100% the fault of the user and not bitcoin or bitcoin protocol itself. It also needs to have the value it has now or even bigger. Once all these conditions are reached bitcoin will become mainstream.

With what you say, I am sure that bitcoin is the market leader, it is leading the entire crypto-currency market, and any small changes made by this king have a great impact on the whole. The market, their value changed dramatically.

Exactly, we have no idea when mainstream starts and when it will end - bitcoin is kinda peculiar, basically everyone heard about it at this point.
But only a few people actually own it or use it, so what is the mainstream? The knowledge of BTC or the fact that you are BTC user?
Additionally, there is really hard to tell when we will reach mainstream - will you wake up someday and will be able to tell - oh yeah, today we reached full mainstream acceptance?

When bitcoin is regularly seen on TV and in billboards that would be the mainstream era for us. The challenge is the bitcoin is decentralized that's why there is no single entity to promote it. We can do it ourselves.

Well that might depends on how you look at it. Bitcoin can be considered mainstream in crypto currency world, but in the world outside of that one, I'd say it's pretty close to being mainstream. I mean, when you think about it, everyone knows of bitcoin and not much about Orbitcoin or Dogecoin, also you can see it being used in more and more places. The only problem is defining what "mainstream" means in this case.

It is already mainstream but not yet fully adapted, In my country I saw a lot of people who are asking about bitcoin because they sees it as a way of earning money without seeing the technology behind it.
Bitcoin has been on a Mainstream but not yet fully accepted or adapted.

Bitcoin can be said to be "mainstream" when everyone in the world has Bitcoin. Can you imagine if every person holds Bitcoin and tells about Bitcoin every day. Of course we would consider Bitcoin to be too "mainstream" to talk about. However, please note that "mainstream" is not suitable for Bitcoin. Smiley

As far as i know that bitcoin is already a mainstream resources of other country, like example in las vegas mostly they used bitcoin in all of there transaction. In my own country  mostly 30% estimated knows about bitcoin, but actually its continue to rise up.if goverment regulated  bitcoin in my own country maybe that's time that bitcoin become the main resources of all income, because we belong from a third world country  who need progress, and bitcoin is the answer of all anxities.

I think it depends which aspect you're talking about. When it is said that Bitcoin will be mainstream, people are quick to think that that would mean it would be accepted everywhere as payment, so there would be no need for cash. I know that that's what Satoshi ultimately designed Bitcoin to be, but there are so many issues that need to be addressed that it doesn't seem like it will ever happen unless the aforementioned issues has been addressed.

I would say Bitcoin is doing much better on the investment and storage of value aspect. If used this way, issues such as transaction times and fees shouldn't matter too much. Volatility can be a good thing because it also means wild appreciation. It seems like it's being used more and more as such, and since everyone just HODLS, holders barely even use the payment options that are starting to be available.

BTC is as mainstream as it can be and its growing from my perspective. We have bankers who are criticizing it, hedge funds that want to invest in it, millennials who are curious and interested in it and there are also some of my friends asking me about it. But its ironic that its the ICOs that are helping making it more mainstream.

Is it important for bitcoin to be mainstream? I don't think so, being mainstream is not a guarantee all will be good.

And being known by everyone is not a standard for becoming a mainstream, but how something manages to turn the ignorance condition.
If nobody hates bitcoin, then bitcoin is a mainstream.

Mainstreaming of bitcoin is base on the acceptance of the community who want to used it beside acceptance of one state is considered. As bitcoin go along many of people are engage on it and even a simple person can hold it in their wallet app. Like in Philippines most of people aware on online or facebook that bitcoin can advertise through mainstream of other user of it. Most of people in this country is using called coin.ph were bitcoin can store in this wallet.

in my opinion it is not just about the number of people who have bitcoin. it can be small but still be considered mainstream. it is mostly about how much bitcoin awareness exists. right now, that is very small. many have not even heard the name bitcoin let alone know about it.
additionally there is regulations an adoption by merchants. these two are also important factors when we are talking about mainstream. when the shops (the offline, or physical ones not just online shops) start accepting bitcoin (like what they are doing in Japan) and when bitcoin was regulated to have clear rules and be officially legal, that is when we can say we have hit mainstream adoption.

To make bitcoin into mainstream is still very far, there are so many rejection and false accusations toward bitcoin and only some country already legalized bitcoin, it will need at least more 70%of countries adapted bitcoin and 80%-90% of population know and using bitcoin then we can called bitcoin as a mainstream currency
