Hi guys,
I just discovered that there is a Bitcoin Forum with ".to" domain. Is it the same forum like this one or is it a phishing website?

Edit: I also found out that "bitcointalk.org" is converted to "bitcointalk.to". Curious... What's the point of this? Can someone please explain to me?

Very likely a phishing site. It apparently nicely copies everything till the latest posts/threads, where people then will get the impression that they are active on bitcointalk.org.

If they then log in, they in some cases log in successfully, or they will see an error pop up. Obviously, in both cases you should then consider your account information compromised ~ how did you find that site?

If I google bitcointalk, it just puts the original bitcointalk.org site at the very top, and there (gladly) is no sign of any other similar domain with a different extension ~ just avoid opening such sites, even a simple visit might be harmful.

I was googling for an altcoin: "eLTC bitcointalk". The ".to" domain is on 10th place on the first page of results.

Looks like someone created a clone site of Bitcointalk.org, I would suggest you not to enter your password and username or otherwise maybe your account will be compromised. Tho, The website completely looks like Bitcointalk.org and I guess they are storing the passwords do not enter your password.

What, is theymos supposed to baby users into not clicking on suspicious bitcointalk links where the URL doesn't match the original? BCT hyperlinks are green when highlighted. https://bitcointalk.org/Phishing PM's are dealt with when users report them but there's no way to prevent a user's stupidity from being their downfall. With the new email confirmations, at the very least, phishing will be less impactful, so you could technically state that theymos 'did something about that'.

I don't think that it is a safe place to be on, since it is extremely easy to get it confused with the real bitcointalk.org site and accidentally log into your account with your username and password and potentially get phished.

However, it could potentially be a mirror that helps people get past the great firewall in China to access info about bitcointalk.

It's just another bitcointalk mirror website. Such website appears quite often. Only original website is bitcointalk.ORG and they don't have any more domains. If you will try to login in to mirror website, you risking to loose your bitcointalk account, because your login details may be revealed to mirror website owner. I remember that some time ago warning was posted about such phishing websites.

This thing is alarming. There's a lot of users here hacked their account and being extort by the hackers as I've seen many of this case. Admins and moderators cannot easily see it. So be careful with the site you click. Don't just fill the form with your username and password. Make sure the site is the original one. Just create a bookmark the original site to avoid confusions and to avoid phishing site. Just simply click it. Hackers these days are very crafty. The clone site looks legit. You can't say it's a fake at the first view.

Also, you should be careful and wise now that there are a lot of phising websites sprouting from nowhere. The members of the community like those who are running their ICOs warn the investors about those fakes.

Anyway, it really is a common sense that it is a phising website and it requires a minimal amount of observation to notice that but if you still fall with those then it is your fault. Awareness is the key.

There is nothing to do, that is another website, even if it is a perfect copy of the original, the admin and the mods can do nothing about it, at most the site could be delisted of SERPs, and maybe they could present a complain to their hosting service but besides that they cannot do much, my recommendation is that you bookmark the right URL of bitcointalk and only access bitcointalk through that bookmark.

None of these sites are official, and you should never enter your password there. If you ever accidentally enter your password somewhere other than bitcointalk.org, you should change it here immediately. Maybe some of these sites are intended for bypassing various blacklists such as China's great firewall, but more likely they steal login information or do other nefarious things.

I can understand how it gets new posts, but how does it know when an old post is edited?

My site (in my signature) has to rescrape the pages to get new information, and some pages I don't rescrape for months since they never change.

It's just a proxy, it sends a request to bitcointalk.org whenever you request a page there.

It's a scam site, they are stealing passwords. Stay away. Source of most password hacks lately. On certain google queries they popup in results before real site.

From technical standpoint they probably setted-up reverse proxy with full logging on their own server.

Looks like it's impossible to login, albeit that doesn't mean that they're not phishing for PWs during the process. I tried logging in under theymos and using his PW but it didn't work. theymos, did you change your PW? Seriously, I tried a fake/random PW but no joy.

The recaptcha would not work because I'm pretty sure they don't have the API key for the same and they'll never get it if requested for the phishing domain.Not to go into technical stuff but login is only possible if the captcha is validated from the back-end.I doubt these sites serve the purpose of taking passwords,they're just mirrored to make the content available for people where bitcointalk.org is banned.

Very interesting - nobody from staff answered this, and now everytime I search for bitcointalk, its second in the list.

Looks like a phishing website, tried to login, but there is an error with captcha.

Silence means one thing - its an inside job.

Bitcointalk.org has no relationship with (bitcointalk . to), I saw many threads asked similar thing before it has been claimed there is no relationship between them. If you tried to log in (bitcointalk . to) with your bitcointalk.org log in information, I recommend you to change your password immediately for secure reason.

Here is a thread where they are trying to get it added to the list of Phishing sites... amazed it's still not there.

This is definitely one of the reasons there have been so many hacked accounts. Hope not to see you here soon trying to recover your account.
