There are transactions before it that aren't confirmed, there is probably a transaction holding all these up.

The one I found was this: https://blockchain.info/tx/83ca55d9d64e5ae54431e3d7dbbbef5da49f53e78a89756ed137633c839c77f9
There's probably more further back, I'll continue...

Edit it's just 2 transactions:

There are two things that are preventing your transaction from confirming...

1. As stated above, your transaction is spending from an unconfirmed parent transaction. Until that transaction confirms, your transaction will NEVER confirm.

2. "Fee per byte 32 sat/B" Roll Eyes I'm sure I don't need to say any more regarding this aspect of the transaction Wink

For what it's worth... I nudged the unconfirmed parent along by submitting to a transaction accelerator. Hopefully it'll confirm shortly... then your transaction actually stands a chance of being confirmed.

3>Is this likely a setup from what you guys see or is it likely to get confirmed??

It looks like it'll conform. Non of the inputs to your transaction seem to have been reused to invalidate your transaction.
You can try to accelerate the transaction on an accelerator like pool.viabtc.com/txaccelerator but  you have to time it so it's between O'Clock and 5 minutes past every hour and you'll have to put both txids in.

1&2. The only thing you can do is try and be more careful who you deal with... ensure they use "proper" fees to send transactions or you can offer to subsidise the fees so they can send with a good fee to increase the chances of it getting confirmed quickly.

3. Honestly, I don't think so, they just cheaped out on the fees. Also, the network seems to be quite busy, likely because BTC is hovering around USD$6000... so there are a lot of unconfirmed transactions and fees are creeping up again.

Going forward:

1> How do I check the blockchain to make sure they used a good fee?

2> How do I check to make sure that this transaction confirming is not contingent on another transaction confirming first?

Going forward:

1> How do I check the blockchain to make sure they used a good fee?

You can view the transaction with your wallet (depending on which one you use) or your favorite block explorer to see the fee paid, and on most explorers, the satoshis per byte fee. You can then check with 21.co's Fee Estimator to see how long they estimate it will take for it to be confirmed.

2> How do I check to make sure that this transaction confirming is not contingent on another transaction confirming first?

Many wallets have an option to not spend unconfirmed inputs (Electrum and Mycelium are the two I know for sure do) and most should have coin control, where you can pick which inputs are being spent. Pick ones that are confirmed.

Going forward:
1> How do I check the blockchain to make sure they used a good fee?
2> How do I check to make sure that this transaction confirming is not contingent on another transaction confirming first?

1. Put the transaction number into blockchain.info (or the block explorer of your choice)... look for something like "fee per byte" or "sats/byte" or "fee per kilobyte" or "BTC/kB" etc.

2. On blockchain.info, if you click the "show scripts & coinbase" link, you will see that "unconfirmed" inputs have a little red "U" next to the BTC amount... for "U"nconfirmed:

If you see that "U", then the transaction that creates that UTXO is unconfirmed.

The thing with BTC is that you have no real control over what fee other people are using when they send to you... if they use a low fee, it may take a while for the transaction to confirm. Undecided All you can do at that point is to try accelerators or "Child Pays For Parent" transactions to push them through... or simply do nothing and wait Wink

When I have incoming transactions with low fees, what I do is forward them to another address with an unusually high fee, sometimes five or more times the recommended fee shown on https://bitcoinfees.21.co

Doing this encourages a miner to confirm it (and the preceding unconfirmed transaction with the very low fee as well).

I don't like waiting for a transaction to confirm for days. It's worrying and nerve racking at a time when bitcoin prices are soaring.

I used to push transactions with Viabuy's accelerator but it's a hit and miss race when the network is congested. The first few seconds of the hour is the small time window to push the transaction.

Your transaction is now confirmed. So the topic is now closed.

It's nice to see that a transaction with a fee this size got confirmed so quickly (I normally send transactions with this fee and it does well for me though haven't done it recently).

Finally confirmed! Thankfully

However, lessons have been learned HERE, and I thank those who have contributed.  I buy and sell bitcoin. It's my job, literally, and often, I buy from and sell to people I don't know. I have basic knowledge of the blockchain, and I have never had any scares until now.

I am going choose sellers more carefully and will set rules for them. If they want to get paid immediately after they send, they will adhere to my rules, otherwise, they will be paid after 1 confirmation.

I'd make it two confirmations.
Blocks can be orphaned making your one confirmation become zero.
For that I'd say expect at least 2 confirmations or 3 if you can get it.
