You need to buy bitcoin/ethereum/litecoin first from a site like coinbase first, then you can exchange them sites like Shapeshift, or EtherDelta (though this one a litle difficult to use)

You can buy altcoins on exchanges like Poloniex, Bittrex, and Cryptopia. But to do so you need to have btc already and you can get those through exchanges such as Bitstamp, Bitfinex, Kraken, Coinbase, and many others. Gl
