How long to receive Bitcoins

Hey guys, guess I'm a complete noob

I've downloaded the Bitcoin client and have it on my system

I bought Bitcoins from Britcoin.co.uk, and had them sent to my Bitcoin ID 1BtY7jfRxij5V5SJEqa34Lc98kPf98KdRx


I didnt really do anything when I set this up but download and install the client, and use the ID it gave me, is this OK?

I ask because, Britcoin.co.uk shows it as "Completed"

I've been trying my best to wrap my head around everything I need to know, but still not sure what the "confirmations" and "blocks" refer to, just a vague idea.

It wasn't a huge amount (just 1.1 BTC)

How long can I expect to wait, and does my Bitcoin wallet have to be open all the time or will I just open it to find the 1.1 there.

Also not sure if it matters, got my wallet up right now, its showing "8 Connections" and something like 129628 blocks, constantly rising

Transactions take time to confirm, as they are interweaved into the whole system. I've seen some transaction confirmations take place in as little as a minute, and some take a couple hours. Be patient, it will clear... its not instantaneous (the blessing and the curse of having this be a decentralized system where no one server, no one clearinghouse is in charge of everything, and every transaction can be confirmed by multiple stations.)

I had the same question when I tried my first transaction. Your wallet needs to download all blocks before it gets to the block that has your transaction. Currently there are just over 134,000 blocks so you're almost there. It will be a lot quicker for transactions to show up from now on because you'll already have all the blocks downloaded.

it looks like you should have received it now.  the transaction shows as having been included in block 134035, which was about 2 hour ago.

if your block count isn't up to that number yet, it won't have showed up in your list of transactions and you'll just need to wait while the blockchain downloads.

Your transaction block is 134035. At the bottom of the Bitcoin client (status bar), it'll tell you the number of connections and which block your client is at. When you go pass 134035; you'll get it. The btc is then in your wallet and you better make a backup of the address (wallet_id) and wallet.dat file.

How would I go about backing up the address and wallet file? the file I get, I find it on my C drive and make a copy of it?..

You need to backup wallet.dat

Yea copy it

remember to read how it work, how NEW addresses are generated and so on... like if you backup it now and you generate a lot of new addresses, you will have to backup it again, because the old backup simply won't have the new addresses

I can't remember for Windows system for sure; but I think it may be a hidden folder. At least that's what's in Ubuntu. So you might need to display hidden files and folders.

dat, not bat. On Windows it's in the application data folder (it might be hidden by default).

someone help me im a noob to. i read so far . i understand its not instantaneous and taks a couple hours.. but i bought coins off ebay and the sender sent them, and i gave him my bit coin address on the main page. so when it clears will will automaticallll appear in my acct. ? or do i have to do something to accept it. can i shut my computer down and will it still work.. plz help.. i have adhd and cant sit still .. thanks everyone fore your help

Backing up your bitcoin-qt wallet is simple. Go to the File... menu and click on Backup Wallet...

A wallet doesn't hold bitcoins. It really just allows you to send them and it keeps track of them. You can receive bitcoins when your computer is turned off because all transactions are stored in a public ledger call the "block chain". When you run your wallet, it downloads the block chain and looks for transactions that use your addresses, and then shows them to you.
