I know what's the purpose of the molex, but if you don't want to connect it for whatever reason, does the x16-x16 riser still work like a non-powered one ?

I mean, have 4 x16-x16 with molex and connect the molex of only 2 of them, while the other two, even if they have a molex connector, you decide not to connect the molex. Would the latter two still work fine ?

Yes, although you might burn out your mobo power connectors if the GPUs are drawing too much current!

You might be able to get away with two powered and two unpowered connectors, but it is not advisable.

Yeah, i know that, mate. I was just wondering what happens if you have x16-x16 risers with molex and you just don't connect all of them. I mean, have 4 x16-x16 with molex and connect the molex of only 2 of them, while the other two, even if they have a molex connector, you decide not to connect the molex. Would the latter two still work fine ?

Still looking for an answer. If you have a x16-x16 riser, please disconnect your molex and tell me if it still works fine. Thanks Smiley

Why can't you try it?
My answer would be it depends on the card.
If the card tries to draw power from the pci-e slot, it would not able to, and might or might not work.

My mobo ran fine for a day without any powered risers (I forgot to plug them in)

I have 2 7970's and a 7950 running.

Do x16-x16 risers even need to be powered?  I thought the whole purpose of powered risers was for x1-x16 because the x1 slot on the motherboard does not provide the same amount of power as an x16, thus using a molex to supplement it.

They supply the same amount of power. All the 12v comes from the first couple of pins before the notch. After the notch, all of that is dedicated to data.

I've just tried some x16-x16 powered risers today without connecting the molex and they seem to work fine. I'll change the title to [Solved]
