So Electrum docs say to move your coins to a new wallet before splitting using the private keys of the old wallet. How do I do that? I've already created a new wallet. If I use a regular network transaction I have to pay fees. There has to be a way to do this from withing Electrum.

Just make new electrum wallet and transfer your bitcoin and backup your privete keys from your from old wallet that you can import in fork coins support like bitcoin cash you can import it in electron cash to claim the free bitcoin cash..
Since the fork was and ended you can claim bitcoin gold but i still don't see any wallet for now that would support bitcoin gold ..
So better to wait more days before bitcoin gold developers announce that there are wallet that support bitcoin gold..

there is none. you have to do it on-chain and bear the cost of the fees.

Don't sweep the coins. Just send a transaction using the max button and set the slider to be within 25 blocks if you don't need the coins quickly as it'll give you a good low fee to use instead.
