How does one make use miner software with thin clients like Multibit? What url does one use for solo mining? It is not possible???

I assume it is in a pass-thru mode, using the Bitcoin network for that.

My command line invocation with the full client was:

bfgminer -o http://localhost:9332 -u me -p password --auto-gpu

Are you trying to solo mine BTC? I don't know if that's possible without bitcoind.  It's certainly not going to get you anything either way.

You should mine in a pool instead.
