Before you buy any asic miner check this out... The data below can be troublesome to read.. So I am also sharing this google spreadsheet.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjEbQ5LBKsAEdDYtajZTMi1Ua0ZkUXR0X0NKSnVaSXc&usp=sharing

To add to your useful spreadsheet analysis, further details about the Jupiter and Saturn from KnCMiner.

Jupiter hashes at 350 GH/s, shipment is also in September 2013, with a $6,995 USD price tag.
Saturn hashes at 175 GH/s, shipment is in September 2013, with a $3,795 USD price tag.

The units are built on a 28nm processes which has greater efficient power efficiency.

From above, the Jupiter cost ratio is $19.98 per Gh/s, and the Saturn $21.68 per Gh/s.

As I said in another thread this shows clearly not to invest !

Mining is going to be run by companies like asicminer and such... individuals will soon be left out !

That's quite the analysis. I can appreciate the time you might have spent putting this together, but I don't think it would be a realistic assumption to apply a static % forecast all the way through next year, however. For example, according to your data a 15% increase in December of this year would be a plausible 29 million jump, but carried through it would cause difficulty to jump nearly 3 billion in only the last 11 days of December 2014. Maybe you were doing this for a very rough, "worst-case scenario" calculation, but absent any new tech or remarkable advancements in efficiency, a 3G increase in 11 days isn't very reasonable. Before the end of this year, we will certainly find difficulty swelling with % increases that we have not yet seen, but as difficulty climbs, we'll see far fewer orders placed and much less production as more and more find their opportunity for ROI dwindle. The growth will be far more parabolic with large increases to start and steadily smaller changes in time.

As far as profitability, miners will begin turning off their rigs somewhere between 3.5-5.5G as long as general power costs and BTC value don't change dramatically in either direction. For now, and especially with still very few ASICs having hit the market, we'll continue to see increasingly large jumps in difficulty coming in the next 6mo - 1yr as the ASIC companies finally start to deliver. After this surge of pre-orders fulfillment and a wave of post-orders, we'll see the difficulty rate increase at continually slower rates. For my estimations, I'm planning on a difficulty of 1 billion by this time next year and maybe 2 billion by the end of 2014.

To sum, while the window of opportunity is closing quickly, I think there's still time for someone to invest in a miner as long as they take power efficiency into consideration.

And when this happens, bitcoin will slowly die (maybe faster than slowly). The aim for decentralization is broken.

@WillMilk4coin,
It's of course not a realistic assumption. But Already last one month difficulty increase was 16%...So on average the increase is going to be 10-25% over six months or year for sure. So in smaller range, your profitability may differ and profitability sharply depends on BTC/USD price...
And about the miner's behavior.. You never know..They will never be altruistic enough to think about the whole bitcoin community.. Because if you show someone 10x~20x profit...They are likely to invest and keep their rigs on.. Another thing is Kncminer is going to host their miners in sweden for their customers...In that case, I dunnoo..And I am afraid that more hosting providing mining system will come..And if all these asic companies are greedy enough, difficulty can jump more than 25%... But if BTC price rises with it, then you win. The same way as BTC sharply rose from last year November..But there I also think, BTC is going to encounter lots of political blow the more it gains popularity..So there are real risk.
However, all you said can be totally true.. The thing is we can just predict in some way, in real world it's much more uncertain.Let's see.

@all,
      Thank you for your comments.

once the hash rate goes up, doesn't it find blocks more quickly, thus the difficulty will increase more often?

Some Explanations..

on average difficulty will be increased every 14 days almost
Date   Increase(%)   Difficulty Level(D)
2/5/2013   10.33            3651012
2/18/2013   11.47            4367876
3/1/2013   19.63            4847647
3/14/2013   10.98            6695826
3/24/2013   38.13      7673000
4/5/2013   14.59     8974296
4/17/2013   12.28    10076293
4/30/2013   12.28    11187257
5/12/2013   11.03    11187257
5/25/2013   8.64      12153412
6/5/2013   28.41           15605633
       16.16090909
                  ||
you can see the average increase in 16.16% from February 2nd upto June 6....
Why do you think the last big 28.41% increase? probably lots of guys got their BFLS and avalon mining devices !!!!

So every 11 day the difficulty is not going to be increased by a fixed (10/20/25/30) % , but on average it will be more than 10~15%. So for you in some weeks when the difficulty is low can be luckier...But difficulty will make that up in the next session.

If difficulty: D
   Number of Found Blocks: N
Total Network Hash Rate:H   =  time * hashrate of miners
For each hash the proability of solving a block is  1/(2^32 * D)   (Read the difficulty page from bitcoin wiki)

D = Maximum Target / Current Target

Current Target gets adjusted so that on average every 2 week the number of blocks found is 2016 (1 block in 10 minutes).
So, why difficulty increases some week? -  Because in the previous 2 week session, miners mined way more than 2016 blocks. But then the difficulty gets increased heavily. But even though, miners mine more than 2016 blocks (but comparatively less than the previous time). So this time difficulty gets increased slightly.. Then miners again mine way more than 2016 blocks with their new hash powers.. These go on and these will continue going on resulting huge network hash rate...

so the fixed increase is actually a rough estimation only.. but the picture will be the same..
It depends on you, which week you are mining..It may turn luckier for you but that won't go on forever.. Sad
Thank you.

All those buying asic right now will probably just break even if they are lucky but a lot will sadly lose money.
All the analysis point to the same conclusion.

Why do you think compagnies sell mining equipement instead of mining ? Because they know what's coming and selling mining equipment will generate much more money than mining with it !

To think I was about to invest...

So basically, you'd need a 600GH/sec machine at the $7000 price point shipping in september to break even?

Depressing stats.

I ordered a KNC yesterday with the option to pick it up in Stockholm (I live in London) -- which, hopefully hopefully, can be done when I'm in town for an international security conference in late September.

It's looking a lot like ASIC mining is a game that everyone is losing together.

That said -- there is one qualification on a positive note: with the rise of ASIC mining and the total hashing power of the network and increase in difficulty, there is also a countervailing trend that may be a source of slight optimism: if everyone is moving to ASIC, then the FPGA and GPU rigs are bowing out, and switching to other coins -- that could mean a drop of about 100 TH/s of the network, counteracting the 400-600 Th/s increase that ASIC will bring about come fall. One can hope.

GPUs probably make up only about 40TH/sec of the network. FPGAs don't really have any reason to bow out, they're not that much less efficient than ASICs. By the time they have to drop out, the amount of hashing power they represent won't even be noticed.

FPGA is the mother for design. Even it is failed at last, you still need to re-use the FPGA for next.

In September, the difficulty will be anywhere from 80 to 180 million, and BTC price from 40 to 60 USD, and a KnC miner will be able to pay itself off in about 120 to 150 days in a bad case, basically it won't make much money after that, but get real, a very good investment pays off in 2 years, and those that pay off i 5 years are also not so common, the age of great returns on investments is definitely over.

I was thinking the same thing.  At the default difficulty, my bitcoins were costing above $100/BTC to mine, but I downloaded the difficulty adjustment patch, all better now.   Cool

I was thinking the same thing.  At the default difficulty, my bitcoins were costing above $100/BTC to mine, but I downloaded the difficulty adjustment patch, all better now.   Cool

What is the "difficulty adjustment patch" ?

I confirm, meant as a joke.  Only way to less difficulty is to switch to alternate fauxcoins. Sorry bout that.

KNCminer is also planning to release a "multi-currency" miner this year, meaning you will be able to program it and mine Litecoins and other new scrypt coins with it.

That will be more interesting to me, as I can now first wait and see if the Bitcoin miner orders come through and the company is trustworthy. If so, I will for sure order their Scrypt miner.

At KnCMiner we are aware of the service we are providing to our customers. We are also aware that we need our customers to have a return on their devices in order to purchase form us again. With the scale of the supply chains, agreements and factories we have access to, we need to be cautious we don’t ship too many devices and therefore reduce the return to our customers.  So with that in mind our plan is to do as follows:

We will ship no devices in December 2013, January 2014 or  February 2014. Meaning that once we have taken the difficulty up at the end of November we will not release any more hashing power for 3 months. We will then release our new generation of devices, which will begin shipping in March 2014. These devices will also have a much higher GH/$ rating than any of our current offerings.

We would like to state that If any of our competitors continues to add large amounts of hashing power to the network during December, January or February. We will continue to release our devices as competitively priced as we can to protect our customers share of the network.

Thanks

As I said before, going right to 28 nm is one hell of a gamble for them.  One should recall BFL wanted to use a 65 nm process and couldn't even get it off the ground in a year, while ASICMINER on 130 nm and Avalon on 110 nm had a much shorter overall development process.

Did you guys read the latest KNC news letter?
https://www.kncminer.com/news

Apparently they're not going to ship anything from Dec-Feb...as long as there's no competition.  Interesting how this is going to play out.

Thoughts?

I'm rooting for them because its a primary factor in how long a life these miners will have.  Avalon lifespan will be short but they won the profitability game by being first to market, the next game is performance per watt per btc and 3 brands seem to be aiming high for that knc, bitfury and ?avp?

In hindsight being an early adopter with bfl fpga singles ended up hurting my pocket book.....  Cry

you all assume to break even with the miner based on the current BTC price.

But with the BTC difficulty sky rocketing the value of BTC will also (again) skyrocket, so you can make a big profit with these ASICs.
Who knows what the value of BTC will be in 1 or 2 years from now? 200$ ? 1000$ ? 2000$ ?

ermmm no to the 1000+ prices...too many will dump their coins around 500 bucks and the greed alone will make a new bubble crash it could happen but it would be a long term upward spiral trend filled with bubbles.

(but hey...maybe I'm just being a FUD spreader that doesn't want people to buy into mining to postpone the diff. spikes right?)

Bitcoin Network pretty much followed the 25% average difficulty increase table. In fact more than that.

Very damn fishy, if you ask me.  I've talked to Knc a few times about issues (there weren't issues in actuality) i had been having with my Saturn and they were completely dismissive... makes me not wnat to deal with them at all.
