蒂勒森星期三在印度表示，美国愿意为印度的军事现代化提供“最好的技术”，其中包括向印度出售F-16和F-18战斗机。蒂勒森在新德里说：“美国支持印度成为领先国家，将继续为印度在这一地区提供安全保障的能力做出投入。在这一方面，美方愿意并有能力为印度的军事现代化努力提供先进技术。”分析认为，如果印度增购战斗机，能更好地遏制来自中国和巴基斯坦的军事威胁。在出访南亚之前，蒂勒森上星期在华盛顿罕见地直接评价中国，说中国不像印度那样是一个负责任的新兴大国。
