I was thinking about mining on the Kano Pool, but I like to monitor a pool's stats for a while before I dive in.  It looked promising at first.  I have been lurking on the forum that Kano runs for a couple months and watching the blocks the pool hits.  I decided not to join the pool, because it has been abysmal lately.  I don't think a worse run of luck has ever hit any pool.  The size of the pool has been cut by a third of the size it was a month ago.  People are bailing.

The rotten luck the pool is having isn't the main reason I won't join though.  Kano's immature, bratty attitude is why I won't join.  If people ask questions, Kano makes snide remarks about them not having read the FAQs or tells them they should have read what he posted earlier, as if they were psychic and knew he posted earlier.  He doesn't just refer them to the earlier post, he tries to make them feel stupid for not having found it themselves.  Hey, maybe they are stupid, but if growing his pool is a goal, Kano sure as heck doesn't know the first thing about diplomacy or manners. It should be noted that other people on the forum are more than happy to answer peoples' questions, so Kano shouldn't even have to feel put out as if he has to answer every question in the first place.

Worst of all, if anything says anything negative about the pool he deletes their posts.  If people say they quit the pool, even politely, he deletes their post.  He tries to build the illusion that everyone is happy.  They aren't.  I have seen posts appear and then get deleted right away.  People see Kano as a petulant child who is prone to tantrums.  Maybe if Kano spent more time learning manners and how to be friendly and less time pretending to pray to cartoon anime "goddesses," as he calls them, he would be more successful.  I actually wish him great success, because it's pools like his that I want to see grow.  But first he has to grow up himself.

So, in conclusion, the reason I have decided not to join the Kano pool isn't because of it's horrible record finding blocks.  It's because of Kano.

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

Bingo!  I was mining on Kano Pool and was doing well.  I left the pool, because of Kano himself and his attitude in the forum.  I went to Slush.  I made slightly less on Slush, but it was worth it for a couple of reasons.  Everyone is friendly.  You don't have to feel like you are walking on eggshells because of some whiny child running the place who will delete your posts all the time.  And you don't have to deal with others who cow-tow to the child like little sycophants.  Slush miners chat in IRC as well and are always happy to answer questions, even for noobs.

It's too bad Kano is so immature.  If he were more professional, his pool would grow by leaps and bounds.  I would join it again if it were under new management.

1.  So what.
2.  Your post sounds petulant, whiny and childish.

Good luck at Slush.

I'm not debating.  I just attempting point out the hypocrisy of the OP.

It is too popular in recent years to accuse someone else of doing the very thing that they are doing.

And besides, Kano was very up front about his criteria for deleting posts.

I think you may have missed the point.  Whether Kano admits that he deletes posts or gives criteria as to why he does it is beside the point.  He is completely within his right to delete posts and to give a smug attitude toward all the people he wants.  BUT, this kind of behavior doesn't come without consequences.  There is no hypocrisy.  The OP of this thread isn't trying to garner "customers" for lack of a better word.  Kano is.  He lost me.  His pool didn't lose me.  He did.  He is skillful in the fact that he put together the pool in the first place, which is admirable.  But, he's rude.  Rudeness has its price.  He has every right to be rude.  He has every right to censor people on his pool's thread on Bitcoin Forum.

People who are the recipients of Kano's petulant tongue lashings and censorship don't have to take it.  They can move on.  You most likely won't hear from most people who do move on.  They just go.

So you see, it doesn't matter how well you defend his actions, it doesn't get me to join his pool again.  Even if I am wrong about taking any kind of offense to his snark or censorship, I can and will take offense, nonetheless.  That's why the "customer is always wrong" approach never works.  Kano can feel free to use it though.  It's his business.

Oh, and yes, I do like Slush Pool.  They charge more, but they don't try to use a lower charge to justify treating me like a peon.  I fly a lot and when I do, I fly first class.  Why would I do that if it costs more?  Because they treat me like a king.

Oh, I understand that rudeness isn't something that bothers everyone.  I just pointed out that some people are bothered by it.  For me, it depends. When rudeness it domes with smug (I'm better than you) attitude and in a situation where I am a customer of sorts, I can just go somewhere else.

As for your reason for leaving Kano Pool, I can't blame you.  Something seems to be wrong with it.  I don't pretend to know what is wrong, but I find it highly improbable that "luck" is to blame.  If Bitcoin mining had a version of "Selling Short," I'd be all over Kano Pool!

IMHO is not rudness, more like um, kicking someone into perhaps learning more about mining and what is involved in it. With so many of the same queries over and over generally dealing with payments, 5n and, PPLNS - all which are explained as clearly as possible on the site - well one gets testy.

I myself am rather known as short and to-the -point generally because a very simple Google search will give better answers to a lot of general mining questions not to mention rather specific ones such as dealing with AC power, cooling, etc.. Ya know, the whole 'Give a person a fish, teach a person to fish' thing. I do it to prod them into not just getting one answer but hopefully to also learn some of the 'why' behind it.

Mining does involve a modicum of know-how in various things and mining basics are well covered on numerous sites/youtubes etc. You are making a sizeable investment so read/watch all you can about mining -- the info is out there!

Yeah I agree with a lot of what you have to say, but if Kano doesn't want to answer people, he doesn't even have to.  Not everyone is cut out for handling customer service.  Some people shouldn't even try it.  Other people in the forum are eager to help new people even when questions have been asked and answered many times.

But, like I said before, you and many other people may not be bothered by his rudeness.  You may be so knowledgeable about bitcoin mining that you never have a question anyway.

But at one time you were a newbie.  And many newbies come along all the time and just because rudeness doesn't bother you, it doesn't mean it won't bother everyone.  Newbies find the Kano Pool thread on this BitcoinTalk forum and expect that it should be an easy place to ask a question, even if it's a retarded question.  That is what the thread is for right?  Or why even have it?  And let's face it, a thread on BitcoinTalk is not an easy place to search for previous answers to a question.  It won't even allow you to do multiple searches without agonizing and pointless waiting times between searches.  I have no idea what that is all about.  I don't see how there can be a spamming exploit that can be abused because of being allowed to search.  BitcoinTalk is pretty clumsy, and non-user-friendly, especially for a new user.

Of course, that isn't Kano's fault.  But he should know it.  And he chose here to have his little thread going, rather than to set up something more user friendly himself or choose another forum.

I suppose I have digressed a bit.  My only point is that not everyone is as tolerant of rude and snide treatment as you may be.  People will just leave.  Even if it makes no sense to you that they do.  They do.  I did.  And he never even said anything to me.  I just got tired of the childish attitude toward others.  I enjoyed what others had to talk about.  But luckily, there are more pools out there.  And I am not sure if there is any pool out there that has lower earnings than Kano Pool at this time, so I am glad to be gone for more than one reason.

Man, don't even get me started on Kano.  The rudeness isn't an issue for me, I'm rude too.  The deleting posts is regrettable but whatever, it's a self moderated thread, everyone should know it's an echo chamber the moment they see that.

The issue for me is Kano eating up peoples 'dust' from mining ramp up time and pretending it's a negligible amount.  It's not.  And even if it was, it's still other peoples money and he should pay it out to them.  But if you ask him about it, even very politely, like you said, it's like a 12 y/o jumped on the keyboard and had a hissy fit as a response.  "I'll pay that dust out when hell freezes over!" - Seriously, that's a quote, can't be bothered to dig up the link but that's basically exactly what he said.  Three years now he's been stacking up peoples 'dust' and it's well over $75k USD by now.

I think the non-payment of 'dust' and other people who have gotten burned with Kano's pool in other ways (didn't setup their account right, didn't notice until it was already several hundred (or thousand?) USD worth mined, never made whole by Kano, who just kept it and laughed at them about it) are all the reason anyone needs to avoid his crappy pool like the plague.

I would recommend ckPool instead.  Everyone's super nice, there are no fees, no pool wallets, only downsides are it's still very small in size and one time there was a snafu with the first mined block and that unfortunately resulted in no one getting paid for it.  Oh well, that's how beta's go.  I can personally confirm that payments are made now, instantly the moment block is mined, even for amounts that would be 'dust' in Kano's pool.

Good luck and happy mining!

You are spot on about Kano's ramp up time.  He also says, it works out if you lose power and are still able to get profits from blocks that are hit if you are offline and he says that it evens out if you leave the pool and it ramps down.  Both are false.  First of all, if you lose power, you start the ramping down and then once you get power back, you start back at some stage of the ramping back up process.  The odds are you will take a hit on that in dust.  Also, when I left Kano Pool, no block was hit during the entire ramp down (which is 7 days now).  I got nothing on the ramp down.  Kano just got all of my profits on the 3 day ramp up I had to go through.  It's completely dishonest.  And if you have questions about it he gets angry and starts screaming about 5Nd being explained on his web page.  What that 5nD amounts to is Kano being better at embezzlement math than the average person whose eyes are going to glaze over when trying to understand what he posted about it, so they'll just assume it's legit and ignore it.

I am not really familiar with CKPool.  I will have to check it out.  Thanks!

LOL! Kano just deleted a bunch of my posts, because he couldn't defend his rotten pool.  All I did was tell the truth.  Any other pool pays twice as much.

I think what you don't understand is your shares got watered down after you left as others keep throwing shares at the block, but as you stated the pool didn't hit any blocks so i am not sure why you were surprised you didn't get anything?  If the pool would have hit 10 blocks during your ramp down you would be singing a different song.

Also on the ramp up I think the other miners got what you think is your share as they would share with you on the ramp down after your gone.

Thanks!

I think what you don't understand is your shares got watered down after you left as others keep throwing shares at the block, but as you stated the pool didn't hit any blocks so i am not sure why you were surprised you didn't get anything?  If the pool would have hit 10 blocks during your ramp down you would be singing a different song.

Also on the ramp up I think the other miners got what you think is your share as they would share with you on the ramp down after your gone.

yeah  that complaint he makes is not valid.

ramp up and kano pool hits zero blocks  then ramp down and kano pool hits 5 blocks    you scored

he just happened to have bad luck.  and the opposite happened.

I mine now at nicehash  1 payment every friday   nice and simple

keeps fees down.  Daily payouts are now a bitch.

Phil I use the NiceHash password P=.21 so my miners only go there if the pay is high, if not I split my 2- S9"s between 2 pools as to average out the payments and luck even more. I have not made  money mining like this since those very first USB miners i bought thru canary years back.

The funny thing is that most of the excuses for the ramp up and ramp down I hear amount to it all coming out in the wash.  That basically it doesn't matter, because it all equals out in the end.  If that is true, then why have the ramp up and ramp down?  Seriously, if it truly makes no difference, why do it?  There is a reason.  Not that it will matter anymore really anyway, because Kano Pool is dead.

It tends to keeps people from pool hopping. No different than why Slush does what he does on his pool. You can mine there for hours and get nothing if your shares go stale before a block is hit.

yeah the 5n is not a big deal.

dust is wrong and gets more wrong as price of coin goes up.

He simply  should of said I am not paying dust.

And when dust  got more valuable   shifted from 0.0001  to 0.00001

Dust was under 0.0001 x say 200 usd = 2 cents

Dust now is under 0.0001 x say 8800 usd = 88  cents

If he had simply kept dust  and just shifted it

to 0.00001 x 2000 when  coins were 2000 it would still be 2 cents a block

he could now do that but won't

very true phil as the price of coins changes a lot of things. Remember how after we hit those 2 blocks as a mini pool it hit you that you were having to handle a large sum of money to distribute to the 10 of us miners.....what if that was now it really would have been a lot of $ for those 2 blocks.
