There is only one node in London, for instance.

It's probably me. Bitcoin Pooled Mining server.

Hey this is awesome. I am getting a lot of friends into Bitcoin here in Mexico. Tongue
Is there anyway to have stats shown such as the number of nodes in each country, nodes/capita ratio, etc?

I think there is a bit of a bug in the map display.  If you click on some of the markers, it will say "1 of 2" or "2 of 3," etc.  However, you can never view the last IP of the set.  You can only view the first two out of three, for example.

very cool.

cannot find my IP address on the map and had bitcoin online for the last 4 days. does anyone know how frequently the map is refreshed ?

someone suggested to have a counter to indicate how many nodes are active. that would be very useful.

related to this, does anyone have an idea how many bitcoin users there are today ?

cheers

You may have a marker but your location appears somewhere other than where you are looking.  Have you searched the KML to see if your IP Address exists?

Those running mining software only and not running a bitcoin node will not appear on the map.

This map doesnt work anymore?

The server that collects the node data and hosts the KML file is managed by the operator of Mt. Gox so with everything going on with that I don't even know that he's aware of this outage.

I have a .kml archived from a few weeks ago which I can post if that helps you at all.

The KML is from June 14th, I believe: http://c1958612.r12.cf0.rackcdn.com/bitcoin.kml

The Google map using that KML:

Hopefully the live one will be resumed.   If the downloads on this one causes my quota to be exceeded let me know and I'll try to find another location to host the file.

I think google maps can only display a max of 4000 'blobs' anyway, we've long passed that count.

I beg your pardon? Most users do not port forward their apps. :/

EDIT: Does anyone know any other map provider which reads from a KML file? Looks like the file is up, just downloaded it, and google doesn't want to load it. Maybe it is too big?

Ok, looks like it is a file size limitation.  Because XML is so verbose, the only way I could get all markers to appear was to remove some of the data items.

I removed the <description> tag which included IP: and Version: data items.
Without those, the <styleUrl> was no longer needed either.

$ cat "bitcoin.kml"|sed 's/<styleUrl>.*<\/styleUrl>//g'|sed 's/<description>.*<\/description>//g'

So now the file loads, but no longer do we have the red / green indicators:

Look how much that map has filled out over the past few weeks ... very impressive!
