If you could, GPU or ASIC

Hey guys,

I've recently got interested in bitcoin (I started doing it AGES ago when it was new and fresh but sadly i gave up on it and now i'm kicking myself.) ATM I'm running Nicehash, as I've only got my little laptop.

After the boss finally got a power bill from the black hole she calls a filing system, i worked out that my little hobby is still profitable on several levels.

Basically I'm coming into some money shortly and I'm looking at taking the next step up with my hobby, but am tossing around with if i should make a GPU rig or an ASIC.
I LOVE the Nicehash program and i think there was another one called Multiminer as well (Would run more than one GPU), but the raw power of the ASIC.

If you had 3k what would you do? ASIC or GPU rig? (Would try look at/consider a noise proof case and running water cooling on the cards to dull out some noise and use it as a Media server/Torrent box)

Several GPUis is better. ASICs are narrowly specialized. GPU farm you can configure for any coin which is more beneficial

I would go with the GPU approach as you can switch to any profitable coin if the current one you're mining is already not.

Definitely GPUs. It allows you to be more flexible by being able to switch between mining different coins. Also, if ever you quit mining, you can sell your used GPUs because chances are they're still usable. You cant use ASICs to do gaming and other stuff whereas you can if you buy GPUs instead.

I've been pondering about this (given I have the chance to do both of it which is not gonna happen in the near future) and after a careful thought, I would say that I will pick GPU. With GPU, you can mine a very wide array of coins that are not well-known and this could provide you good profit if their prices suddenly soar. I'm also a gamer so these GPUs will be used by me even if I'm not using them to mine. ASICs are powerful, we can't deny that but their usage is very limited only, that is to mine a certain type of coins. Quick advice, take consider your personal preference on the matter. It would make making your decision so much easier.

ASIC all day. You can get ASIC for SHA256, Scrypt, and X11, so why even play with GPU?

X11 is probably the most profitable these days and a D3+ will spit coin all over the place.

Depends on what crypto you are aiming to mine. If you are aiming for bitcoin. Then use ASIC miner. It is way too fast than GPU miner. Bitcoin mining with GPU these days are not recommended since it's more slower solving blocks than ASIC. Also i don't know if GPU still supports mining Bitcoin. And if it is, i don't think it's profitable. But compare to GPU. GPU can mine more different coins than ASIC. ASIC miner can only mine sha256 crypto like Joulecoin, Namecoin, Bytecoin, Devcoin, Terracoin, Unicoin etc. GPU miner almost supports all altcoins in the market.

If i were to buy a mining rig. I will buy GPU miner. Because it's flexible ane you can able to mine good coins like Ethereum. Also it's more silent than ASIC. You can mine indoor with GPU unlike ASIC that is too loud. You need to find a proper place to store and make sure to store it in a cool place.

If you buy asic you should do it in firs 2 weeks, because the complexity will quickly increase when new ones are released. And the second reason is that they are not reliable and often break, unlike the GPU cards.

Some say asic is good for mining and earn more profits. I can't tell you about asic i haven't tried it but when you could get second hand graphics card from your country you just save 20-30% of the original price like what i did before

You can start small, and as you get better at configuring the miner to the coins you are chasing, you can add.

You can mine Zcash and Monero using CPU and GPU. Your best bet is to mine Monero also known as Cryptonight using CPU which is more profitable. But the main question is, what type of VPS are you looking to get into? What I mean is -- are you looking for a paid VPS or a trial VPS? You've got a few options too choose from, so I would take my time and research. Mining Monero can be very profitable if you scale it.

Definitely GPUs...u can mine diferent coin and if u deside to quit mining u can still sell it not having problems to find buyers...or u can use the equipment to build a very very good gaming pc

Gpu is a more viable option if you need to get rid of gpus you have more than just miners to sell your gpus to. You can just mine alts and trade to bitcoin if you want or just hold alts and wait for them to rise and sell or trade them.

A lot easier and AIO solution is AntMiner. I would go for that.

Well it all depends on your electricity bill. ASIC miner would be better, it would definately mine more Bitcoins, but it would spend more electricity. GPU would demand lower amount, but it also depends how much GPUs you have. So at the end I would recommend ASIC miner, because you have 3000$ and for that money you can buy some decent antminer.

I would choose the GPU. This is a faster way to become a good digger. You will get some experience and you will like it. A friend of mine uses the GPU and always recommends it.

From my experience, GPU farms are more flexible on the coins you can mine compared with ASICs. Though they produce more power and hashes for a certain algorithm, ASICs are made for only a single algorithm and AFAIK you cannot alter it to mine another coin with a different algorithm e.g. SHA-256 Antminer S9 to mine ETH. As for the case of GPUs, you need extensive care to many units, not just a single machine. Though it needs more time to handle, you can always follow what coin is the most profitable to mine unlike ASICs, thus reaching your ROI faster.

Still supports it, but a complete waste of time and energy. You'd make more doing faucets in a day.

Be sure that the GPU mining of alts is the easiest way. If you whant mine using ASIC you should buy it in a first days days sale. It ASIC regulary brake down, so you will earn nothing if you buy 1 of 2 ASIC after 1 or 2 months of sale and if 1 of them will break down....
