Best hardware configuration for Bitcoin Development Environment?

Hi,

I am running a Bitcoin Full Node on a Macbook Pro and currently have 14 connections. So far so good... The thing is I want to be able to run bitcoind and start developing for Bitcoin.

However, I have been unsuccessful in installing bitcoind and cannot pass commands to the terminal etc.

I am running on a 2012 Macbook Pro with 4GB of Ram running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and after DL'ing the full blockchain I still have 100GB of space left.

I can keep trying to make this computer work or just keep it running as a full node as is, and set up a new system that I can use for development.

If I do that, what would be the recommendation of which hardware / operating system I should go for?


Can I just go with a Linux desktop with plenty of HD space? Any preference? I figure if I am going to set up a Bitcoin Development Environment, I'd like to see what are best practices which I should go for.

If money isn't a problem, you could go with Bitseed. Just plug it and you're good to go. The product comes with two models (1TB and 2TB). So, regardless of which model you choose, It should be sufficient for a few years annd I also find them better because they consume less power (much less) then a computer.

Thank you for the recommendation.

At the moment, Bitseed seems to be sold out.

I'm currently already running a full node on my MacBook Pro and I've gotten it to average around 14 connections to the Bitcoin network on average.

My challenge is that I am working through the Mastering Bitcoin book by Andreas Antonopoulos and have gotten stuck at the Bitcoin Core API section. In other words, I have a running node on my MacBook but can't find a way to access the JSON-RPC interface.

Final question - would running a Bitseed (if I can get my hands on one), enable me to issue commands to the node? I'm currently testing commands via the web using a site called https://chainquery.com but would like to find a way to work on code on a node I run at my home.

Are you want bitcoin-only development? Bitseed is bitcoin-only.
I think you can use any avaliable hardware. Full node sowftware is not calculation-greed.
But your hardware must be able to run developer tools fast.

I recommend any i7 or i5 CPU 0-5 years old, much more RAM as you can to afford (8Gb minimum, 32Gb recommend) and SSD for full node data and developer tools (512Gb and more). RAM and SSD are crucial for any developer need. I talk about it as developer with 15 years of experience.
OSes - MacOS or Linux will be well.

Excellent advice and appreciate the detailed hardware recommendation.

I have tried to get the MacOS version of Bitcoind to work on a full node I am currently running, but have not been able to make it work after trying for weeks.

My interest is exclusively Bitcoin only development at this point.

Will try a Linux machine.
