Will bitcoin always be number 1? Or will there be a day when another coin takes over?

For the foreseeable future I would say yes. The bulk of vc funding is going into bitcoin right now and is the most widely accepted by merchants. However if a new coin comes along that can quickly change. Do to the low level of acceptance out side th crypto community any coin wanting to takeover the number 1 spot would have to come on really big and attract a lot of outside people at the same time.

Will bitcoin always be number 1? Or will there be a day when another coin takes over? Dont worry, no other coin has even small chance to take over Bitcoin

Just imagine the large amount of trust that would be lost in cryptocurrencies in general if another coin completely destroyed Bitcoin. All your Bitcoin enthusiasts would be either broke or unwilling to invest in a new virtual currency, knowing that the same situation could happen repeatedly.

Unless there is a true breakthrough in design and the new crypto offers a major advantage over bitcoin, I think it is unlikely an alt will become more popular than bitcoin due to the network effect.

The only thing Litecoin really offers is faster confirmation time. However, someone pointed out that bitcoin's 10 minute confirmation time is a PRESET value rather than a performance value. The sweet spot of 10 minutes allows the best balance between speed and network security. This network security is needed to avoid forked blocks and lower the chance of double spend attacks. What happens when Litecoin becomes as popular as Bitcoin with a comparable network size? How are they going to magically have a faster confirmation time while maintaining the level of security thats expected? At this point, Litecoin would offer NO ADVANTAGE over Bitcoin and so I see no reason for it to ever compete on the same level. You can't turn silver into gold.
As far as any other cryptocurrency is concerned, these are people trying to re-invent the wheel.. and IMO are very unlikely to succeed

Bitcoin will most likely remain the most prevalent coin globally especially due to its existing acceptance. Most other coins were created to solve a specific perceived problem (or problems) with the properties of Bitcoin. It is quite possible, on the other hand, that other coins will become more prevalent in certain markets where the specific properties they provide are more valuable.

I hope so, the only other coin I see worth looking at is Litecoin. But I think bitcoin is used a lot more and accepted by many more people and businesses.
