I find the arbitrary restrictions set on "newbies" to be mildly insulting. I also find them to be a deterrent to participation.
Look at the post quality in the newbie section, and compare it with posts outside.

Suppose it's a way to keep sock puppets and spammers out?

I'm not trying to be obnoxious. I just want to to generate some open dialog. That's what makes a community great.
Open dialog is fine, but in all fairness, I doubt anyone is even looking at posts in the newbie section, unless they're a newbie themselves. I'm pretty sure I won't return to this corner of the community once I've served my time here.

A quiz sounds like fun. But the questions should be more technical than historical.

Agree with the quiz idea. A lot of people have been into bitcoin for a long time, but just lurk instead of registering here. Having to stay in newbie jail and contrive posts to get out is just plain obnoxious.

The newbie jail shows who should sit in actual jail and who deserves to be here.

Agreed. I first heard about Bitcoin in 2009 (but did nothing ) and got more heavily involved in February this year, so to be confined to the "newbie" area is kind of disappointing (although compared to others who have been active since 2009, I am a newbie).

How is it insulting? Maybe a quiz would be better
A Quiz on BitCoins, let's see: Question 1: Who made BitCoins? 1) Satoshi 2) Gorrilaz 3)I dunno 4)So painfully obvious. Having a quiz is bad news. All of the questions would be easy to answer. The Answer is 1, 4, and other="My miners make the bitcoins out of wasting brain cycles of my components, well kinda, they alone don't make them, but whatever"

Howdy! I have been lurking here since December 2012 and have learned a ton from everyone on here. This is a great community! I am currently mining LTC with my small GPU collection. I hope to increase its size soon https://i.imgur.com/ZDHhDI8l.jpg

The restrictions seem incredibly arbitrary.

@benwahbe
How do you keep that thing cool. It looks incredibly restrictive.
@Everybody Else
The restrictions are due to a spam attack. Not sure if the requirements in place are the best or not but, it is what it is.

i don't think the newbie restrictions are a bad thing. Sure, it is annoying but if it ups the quality of the main forums it is surely worthwhile - unless of course there is some desperate need to post in the main forums ....
i have lurked here for a good while before even bothering to register an account. At least this thread is here so i can rattle off a few meaningless sentences so that i can satisfy whatever bot manages the newbie posting privileges ...

I feel these restrictions help limit, as mentioned above, spam accounts who post in the marketplace and other parts of the forum such as the group buys section.

really? well maybe it's to deter people from creating scam accounts, you know? makes it more time-consuming. could always get whitelisted.
