I sent a transaction 7 days ago which still hasn't been confirmed, i did allow for RBF but when i click on increase transaction fee i get a message "Increasing transaction fee failed, (Transaction does not have a change output)   

what does this mean and how can i avoid it.

It means that there is not enough money in the transaction to increase just the transaction fee. Your wallet is likely increasing the fee by decreasing the amount that is sent to a change address. It will not decrease the amount that you originally requested to send. Since your transaction does not have a change output, there is nowhere for it to increase the fee from so it fails to increase the fee.
