Hey there!

I'm preparing my 1st mining rig and I have already decided I'm going to be using the amazing and versatile GTX 1070.

It would be great if I could save money buck by using some parts of my old computer. Here are the specs:

CPU:  Intel Core i7 2600K 3.4Ghz Box Socket 1155

MOBO: Asus P8P67

SSD: SanDisk Extreme 240Gb

RAM: Kingston DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 16GB (2x8)

PSU: Corsair HX650 650W Modular

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Twin Frozr II OC

COOLERS: Noctua NH-U9B SE2
Lian Li LanCool PC-K60

I guess MOBO maybe not able to support 6 GPUs, maybe 4? It's my first rig so not terribly necessary to go to 6+, but wouldn't mind changing it any way.

Also, I would say the SSD is in pretty lame condition after 5 years of intensive use, not sure how important its condition is.

Thank you very much in advance guys!

-I guess the MOBO can't handle even 4 of these 8GB GPU beasts, but I'm wondering if I could find some MOBO that can handle 4 to 8 1070's and still be compatible with DDR3 memory and i7-2600k, so I can take advantage of them. Would be a sweet feeling to recycle my beloved old computer. My memory and CPU are also in great condition according to userbenchmark test, so it would be a shame to waste them.

-Also, don't know if I could sneak my GTX 560 Ti in a random slot, or if it's so slow that's even pointless lol but even if I could make 15$ a month would be a great feeling to be able to keep milking it after all these years Cheesy

I've been using an ASUS Z87-Plus to run 4 1080ti's, but it's an 1150 socket.

If you have Win 7 or 10 professional, then the OS can be moved.

What you could consider:

1) Move to a H81 BTC pro MB, $70 newegg. 1150 + 6 usable PCI slots

2) Read PhilMa's thread for suggestions on cheap but sturdy, big power supplies.

3) Sell your I7 on ebay?! ($100?)

I'd buy everything separate from your old system and keep the old system for yourself. You can start a new rig for a few hundred dollars without counting for the GPU costs. Your GPU's are going to cost you

Thank you all for the answers!! I appreciate your help!

Ok, that's good to know about the OS. It has already installed Windows 10 on it.

That seems like the best option, I would only need to buy MOBO and GPU and PSU.

1) I guess that MOBO is compatible with DDR3 RAM and 6x 1070 GPU?

2) I have searched through bitcointalk and through google but I havent been able to find the thread, could you link it for me?

Thanks, but I'm not using my pc for anything at all, I want to save some buck by taking advantage of my old RAM, old SSD, etc...

Well, I've done a lot of research (a fucking lot!!) and apparently my ASUS P8P67 slots would work just fine. This is what this old machine has:

1 x PCIe 2.0 x16
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black) *1
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1
3 x PCI

So far I think I got it right that it can work with 4 good GPUs (like the GTX 1070), I guess I would have to use some sort of risers because there's no way the GPUs fit into the slots all together.

Still not sure if the Gen 1 slots would handle a 1070, if anyone can help I would be very grateful!
