Making a guaranteed return on investment is not the point of the USB block erupter. It's more of a Bitcoin greeting card.

People that bought them wanted to increase their hashing rate NOW, at a cost that would not break the bank, with less heat so their rooms would not turn into ovens because of graphics cards' heat.
