I strongly believe bitcoin will be overtaken by ethereum,  Bitcoin is a dinosaur  that is slow and has high fees.  You already have 40 btc though, if I had that much I would never have to work again, so your still in a good situation.

the last 24 hours is purely whale manipulation of the market. they first got the insider information about the SegWit2x thing so they started pumping the price (you can see the big bitcoin market can not longer move up that much anymore with manipulation) so price went up to $7888 (~10% rise). then the news was released and the dumping and shorting began (again manipulation and again small effects) back to $7100 range.

Why are you panicking, I am sure that you invested in btc being aware that the value  might go down any time or even go up, its not a surprise. You made a mistake by buying when the value was high, hopefully you will learn from your mistakes, this is always the case: buy low and sell high.

I traded a portion my bitcoins for tether since the value is stable, I am now waiting for the value to go down so that I can buy more bitcoin. Trade smart to avoid making a loss, and don't panic since the value will always go up.

People were buying up BTC to get free Segwit2x coins, and a lot of people were refusing to sell to do the same, is my guess. Now that it is cancelled, they can free up their Bitcoins, everyone is buying up those cheap alts, so you can see every alt is gaining. But still, BTC correction was due for a very long time. I'm actually quite surprised it's still staying above 7000. With nothing left to look forward to in 2017, I guess we can all expect a slow quiet movement, maybe sideways all the way til new year.

That's the point. People went into BTC, because they wanted to earn free coins and money with the fork. Segwit2x cancelled, free coins and free money cancelled, therefore the caravan moves back to where it came from: Alts.
Let's see, where the bottom line from BTC is. Should be around 5k, maybe lower. And in my opinion we will reach this bottom within the next days. Let people comprehend what's happening and there will be a big flight out of BTC.

It is simple supply and demand, people were stocking on bitcoin since they thought the forks was coming so they wanted to have bitcoin in order to get their airdrops and then sell them or trade with them now that the fork is not going to happen there is no point in having so much money invested in bitcoin anymore and that is why you are seeing a decrease in the price since the demand has gone down a little.

Investors has started converting their bitcoin to altcoins as the plan sigwith2x has been cancelled and many of those that invest into bitcoin because of the free coins from bitcoin gold the splitting coin is no longer coming up again. Altcoins is going to be the greatest beneficiary of this latest developments as investors are selling they bitcoin and buy altcoins and that is why you are seeing drop in bitcoin pricing.
