Hi guys,

I found an 3year old wallet.dat on my old PC. I decided to restore it. So I followed a tutorial how to back up old wallet.dats.
I did everything like the tutorial told me. Now the misery begins.

After starting Bitcoin Core, it takes me around 45-60 minutes to login to my wallet. It says "Searching/Browse again...1%,2%..." and so on.
Is this normal?

After waiting almost 1 hour, I finally can see my old Bitcoins. Then when I keep Bitcoin Core open and running for around 2 hours, it crashes and closes automatically. I get a message which says: "...check your debug.log" I press okay and the message pops up again.
After confirming okay for the fourth time, the message "dont shut down your computer until..." goes away and Bitcoin Core is closed completley.

This is what my debug.log says:

https://gist.github.com/cepoxyz/68a57ced7b2506da618bd6d4213ab873

Can someone of you please decrypt this debug log and tell me what my problem is? I can't find a solution to fix this.
Also when I try to payout the BTC's, my Wallet won't accept the password. I think this has something to do with the bug (please correct me if I am wrong). I wrote the password down when I set the password 3 years ago, so I should work 100%.

Did I restore the wallet wrong?

Would be very helpful if you could help me out.

Thank you.

Best,
Alexa

It looks like your wallet file is corrupted. Undecided

When trying to restore this file, did you run some programs or scripts or something to try and "restore" the file? Huh If so, you might have corrupted it. Do you make copies of the original wallet.dat? Note: to "restore" the wallet, all you should have needed to do was put a copy of the wallet.dat into the Bitcoin Core data directory... and start Bitcoin Core.

As for Bitcoin Core, shut it down. Then try renaming the wallet.dat that is currently in the Bitcoin data directory to OLDwallet.dat... and then start Bitcoin Core and let it sync up. See if it is still crashing.

Once you've confirmed that Bitcoin Core is working OK, you can shut it down, then put a copy of your original wallet.dat back into the Data Directory and then try starting up Bitcoin Core again. It it starts crashing, then your wallet file is definitely corrupted Sad

thanks HPC.
no I just renamed the wallet.dat to wallet_old.dat and put a copy of my 3year old wallt into the Bitcoin Core data directory.

I followed your advise and renamed the 3y old wallet.dat to OLDwallet.dat, started Bitcoin Core and I was logged in immediatly. Then it shut down Bitcoin Core, renamed my OLDwallet.dat to wallet.dat again. And I have the same problems. 1 hour until I am logged it.  The new file with 0 BTC on is around 1367kb, my 3y old wallt file around 700kb.

I guess my wallet is corrupted. Is there any chance to fix the corrupted wallet via "salvagewallet" command or Bitcoin Core console?

Firstly, you should only work with "copies" of your old wallet.dat. Don't work with the original file!

"salvagewallet" is probably the LAST thing you want to attempt. It doesn't fix the wallet, it just scans it looking for anything that looks like a private key.

I would suggest that you try and use the "pywallet" Python script to try and read and recover the private keys etc from the wallet.dat file... but you would need to know how to use Python and the command line.
