Listen to AliceWonder. Former Mac and iOS (iPod touch) user, now Linux and Android. Get a Nexus 4 and install a custom ROM to disable Google tracking and add extra features. It's only $300 and it better in every way.

- 8MP back camera (1080p video)
- Front camera (don't remember quality exactly, but better than either camera on the newest iPod touch.
- 4 processors (compare to one, and one of a lower quality at that, with Apple)
- 2GB RAM (compare to 256MB with Apple)
- 4.7 inch display of the same pixel density as Apple ("retina")
- No contract, carrier, etc, just buy and use like an iPod, or pop in a SIM card and use with AT&T, T-Mobile, or any other GSM carrier.

Not to mention how beautiful it is, and that it has wireless charging.

One time I purchased a cheap Sandisk belt-clip player. It ran for 2 days, and it just stopped working. Back to Christine.

I bought a brand-new Samsung Galaxy Player, and it sparked up when I put it on the charger. Back to Christine.

this is not the perfect phone... I own one:

• glass breaks easily
• earpiece and microphone quality are shit
• big and heavy

all in all a great phone, though.

I also can highly recommend cyanogenmod. Too bad they removed control over app permissions.

Everything a apple product does, the android does better. Plus can be found a lot cheaper. Obviously, both phones have restrictions, but can be jail broken and altered to you're needs. Everyone loves apple because of Itunes and the apps, but android offers the same type of thing. Androids are a lot faster & more efficient. If you just want to listen to music, get a small mp3 player, there is no need for a iphone or android phone then. But, if you want it for anything else get a android phone.

To the Op. If you still want a Ipod touch and a android phone is out of the question for you, the either the latest version (5th generation) or the 4th generation. Otherwise you'll get limited on the apps you can get. I believe the 3rd generation only goes to IOS 3 (Don't quote me on that). But generation 4+ goes right up the the latest firmware.

If your needs are for those things which the Android does better, then yes. If your needs are for those things which the Apple does better, then no.

If you're a professional, and seek quality apps for your profession, and depending on your profession, the Apple might be a better fit. And in fact, in every case that I sought specific apps for certain domains, the apps for the Android were garbage or unavailable.

for me it's not about what platform is technically better or what apps are available... iOS is just simply out of the question because of the restrictive policies. Apples is boxing you in.

Want to develop for the phone? Better get a mac.

Want to put an app into the appstore that promotes gambling? Tough luck.

Want to just put some music onto the device w/o using iTunes (sorry, no linux version exists, get a mac), you have to jailbreak the device to put on sshd. What do you mean it's not a USB storage device?

Use full disk encryption on iOS? Guess not.

Route all traffic through VPN? Unsure, but probably easier on android (easy with cyanogen)

It's not all good with android either (control of app permissions as an example), but it's clearly the lesser evil.

FirefoxOS and Ubuntu I haven't looked at... they might be an even better option.
