Mt. Gox - Bankruptcy

Hello BF members, my first post.  Noob to the scene.

Can someone take the time to explain to me how Mt. Gox went out of business / bankrupted, and yet the CEO is apparently walking with close to 1 Billion in equivalent funds?

I have watched bitcoin for years, understand what it represents.  But if this is how justice is served, I'm not sure how this Mt. Gox disaster plays to the better side of the possibilities with this amazing currency.
