There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Yes, right now it is a seller's market out there. 3K to 4K has been the going rate. This reminds me of the time when BFL FPGA were selling for 1.2K to 2K on eBay. And it wasn't that long ago. Like last month, I believe.
