• The fee is as low as possible and changes depending on the amount of time that has elapsed since the launch. It was introduced solely for the purpose of protecting against spam transactions.
• Forging and proof-of-stake. The operation of the network can be supported by ordinary computers.
• Worthwhile reward for forging. A miner who creates a block is rewarded with the sum of all the transaction fees in the block. If certain conditions are satisfied, a miner also receives a guaranteed reward in the form of newly created SPA tokens.
• The reward per block changes every 500,000 blocks. The initial reward is 8,000 SPA for each block.
• To protect against malicious users, tokens affect the ability to create blocks only one day after they have been credited (1,440 blocks).
• Protection against 51 % attacks, nothing-at-stake attacks, and other malicious actions.
• Transactions are deemed safe after 10 confirmations (10 minutes).
• Blocks are generated once per minute.
• There are 888 transactions in 1 block.
• The network capacity is as follows: 14.7 transactions per second; 888 transactions per minute; 53,280 transactions per hour; and 1,278,720 transactions per day.
• The total number of tokens will be 8,888,888,888 (~ 9 bln). Of these, 10% or 888,888,888 (~ 900 mln) are part of the premine. All coins will be issued for circulation on stock exchanges, and the proceeds will go toward growing the cryptocurrency.
• The issue will not end before 2025.
• A mnemonic seed (mnemonic phrase), a set of several unrelated words, is used to generate the address.
• In the SPARTA network, addresses start with “SPA”. For example, SPA1APoGEhZF6spoqniQn8rBVAz2WgNoaUuw
• Apella (APL) is the smallest fractional unit of the cryptocurrency, equal to one 100 millionth (0.00000001).

SPARTA uses the proof-of-stake concept, which means that account balances are used for forging instead of computing power (as is the case with mining based on proof-of-work). SPA tokens (coins) are used instead of processors and video cards.
 
To start forging:

1. Create a SPARTA wallet and deposit SPA tokens in your account. A minimum of 888 tokens is required to start forging.
2. Run the special application on your computer. After the application is started, it automatically begins supporting the SPARTA network. When a block is created successfully, you receive a reward.

The chances for creating a new block are distributed among all network participants based on a special formula depending on the balance amount at their addresses. The more SPA tokens in the account, the more chances to create a block.

The reward for creating a block depends on the number of coins in the user account:
 

• If a miner has between 888 and 999,999 SPA (inclusive) in the account, he or she receives only with the sum of transaction fees.
• If the miner has SPA 1,000,000 or more in the account, he or she receives with the sum of transaction fees and newly created SPA tokens.

Thus, miners in the first category support the network, but miners in the second category also help the cryptocurrency grow by investing at the initial stage. Accordingly, these miners get more profit.
 
To avoid centralization, all miners with balances of 1,000,000 SPA or more have the same changes of creating a new block. That is, if one miner has SPA 1,000,000 and another has SPA 25,000,000, their chances of creating a block are the same.
 
Miners who have more than SPA 1,000,000 are recommended to divide their coins and forge on different servers and in different locations — countries, cities, etc. Doing this is much more useful for the SPARTA network. The SPARTA network automatically tracks and punishes unscrupulous miners using several computers with balances over 1,000,000 SPA in a single location to enrich themselves rather than develop the network.
 
A new block is created every minute. So a miner gets a chance to create new SPA tokens every 60 seconds. The reward for a block changes depending on the total number of the blocks created (i.e. based on the elapsed time).

Private and public keys

Each SPARTA user has 2 keys: a private key and a public key. What are these keys?

- Let's consider the private key. When you create a wallet, you automatically generate a secret mnemonic phrase, which is a set of several random unrelated words. For example, a mnemonic phrase might be "force silence flight coward silent peace party drink trust weary doom also". This phrase becomes both your username and password for the wallet. It is used to generated your private key, which is not visible to anyone. Roughly speaking, you can think of your mnemonic phrase as your private key in the SPARTA network. You must safeguard this phrase and never tell it to anyone. Anyone who knows your mnemonic phrase can spend your SPA.

- Now let's consider the public key. Your public key is your SPARTA address, which is used to receive transfers. Roughly speaking, this is like a bank card number. It's enough to receive coins in a wallet, but not enough to send coins to someone else. An address (public key) looks something like this: SPA1HpYNoLDcEsNhblwn

The SPARTA cryptocurrency is built on blockchain technology. This is an enormous ledger that is available to everybody and that cannot be altered. It contains encrypted information about all transactions in the SPARTA network.

A blockchain consists of a chain of inseparable blocks (the pages of this enormous ledger). Each block contains transaction information. Each transaction is verified before it is added to the blocks. In other words, a block represents a group of several transactions.

Moreover, each block always links to the previous block. This means that each block contains encrypted information about the previous block, which means that it cannot be replaced or counterfeited. If an attacker tries to somehow replace an already-confirmed block in the middle of the chain with another block, the blockchain simply will not accept it. Why? Because it will always be different than the block that is being replaced and to which all other blocks are linked.

In the SPARTA network, a new block consisting of 888 transactions is created each minute. Accordingly, it takes one minute to confirm a transfer in the SPARTA network. During this time, the transaction is verified and added to the blockchain.

The SPARTA network is decentralized and new blocks are created by the users themselves. The block information is available to everyone. The blockchain technology makes it easy to verify the authenticity of each payment, and cryptocurrency cannot be counterfeited or hacked. Furthermore, governments and corporations cannot influence the operations within the system.

A fee must be paid on each transaction. But this fee is insignificant compared to bank fees and the fees that apply to other cryptocurrencies. It is purely symbolic and only necessary to protect the network from spam transactions unlike, for example, the Bitcoin fee, which serves to enrich miners.

For example, suppose there's an evil user named Steve. Steve has 2 addresses in the SPARTA network, which he uses to move coins around. He transfers 1000 SPA from the first wallet to the second wallet. Then he transfers the coins from the second wallet to the first. And so on forever. Each transaction is verified and added to the blocks, but this behavior is entirely pointless. And thus Steve is simply creating an unnecessary additional load on the network. Thus, the fee discourages Steve from doing this, since he will have to pay for each transfer from one address to another. The fee also protects against similar attacks.

The network fee does not depend on the transfer amount or the user's location. The fee is the smallest possible and changes dynamically as time passes. The SPARTA network will always maintain the minimum possible fee for users.
For example, the current fee is 1 SPA. At the current USD exchange rate, this is less than 1 cent. But suppose that the SPA exchange rate grows significantly in time and 1 SPA is worth several dollars. In this case, SPARTA will simply lower the fee to, for example, 0.001 SPA, so that the fee is still no more than a few cents.

Proof-of-Stake

Bitcoin and most other cryptocurrencies use the Proof-of-Work (PoW) concept. This was the very first technique used, and it happened to bring a lot of issues with it. However, SPARTA uses Proof-of-Stake (PoS), so here this process is called forging, not mining. What's the difference?

• In the case with Proof-of-Work, mining  requires considerable and expensive computing power as well as huge monthly electricity costs. In search of profits, miners keep buying powerful specialized hardware that costs a huge amount of money. Miners began to pool their powerful resources, thus pushing ordinary people out of mining. This leads to centralization, which cryptocurrency was specifically designed to fight against.
• In the case with Proof-of-Stake as a forging tool, the user account balance is used instead of computing power. SPA tokens (coins) are used instead of processors and video cards. Each token is a forging tool. Thus, forging is more convenient and simpler than traditional mining, because a regular computer is powerful enough. As a result, this method is available to ordinary people and does not promote centralization.

In the SPARTA network the probability of creating a new block is distributed among all network participants using a special formula that depends on their addresses balances. The more SPA tokens are in an account, the greater the chances of creating a block and receiving a reward.

What is a transaction?

Transactions are the only way SPARTA addresses can alter their balances. Each transaction performs a single function. A record of the transaction is permanently stored on the network once it has been included in a block.

In short, a transaction is transfer of SPA from one address to another. When a SPARTA network participant carries out a transaction, it gets into a transaction pool along with all other new transactions of network participants.

All SPARTA transactions are considered unconfirmed until they are included in a valid network block. When a block with a transaction is included in the blockchain, it becomes a transaction with one confirmation. As a rule, once the transaction has been sent, it goes from the pool immediately to the block. As blocks on the SPARTA network are created every minute, in most cases a transaction needs only 1 minute to get the first confirmation.

As subsequent blocks are added to the existing blockchain, each transaction receives new confirmations from each of the added blocks. On the SPARTA network, each transaction is deemed safe after 10 confirmations. If for some reason the transaction is not included in the block before its deadline (24 hours), it is removed from the transaction pool.

Is there a risk of faking SPARTA transactions?

SPARTA network operates in such a way, that it is just impossible to fake any transaction. Each of them has a unique digital signature. And any attempts to commit any fraud, such as sending two similar transactions, will be terminated. Transactions created as a fraud simply cannot be accepted by the blockchain.

For example:

Mark transferred 1000 SPA to Lesley.

When Mark made the transaction, there was an automatic signature of Mark attached, which proves that SPA were sent by him. Such transaction can be accepted by the blockchain.

But here come evil user Steve and tried to fake a transaction by indicating that Mark sent 1000 SPA not to Lesley’s wallet but to Steve’s. But to the disappointment of Steve there was no a unique signature of Mark attached to that transaction, and  blockchain simply denied it.

There is a theoretical possibility of the SPARTA network attacking with the purpose of repeating of the transaction, to return coins to another address, but after going through 10 confirmatons to succeed with any attack aimed to transaction editing will be just impossible. In other words, if a transaction has 10 confirmations, it can not be repeated. It is considered to be safe and complete.

Security

To secure the SPARTA network from attackers, the cryptocurrency uses a host of security techniques. Here are the 4 most important:

• Attackers cannot transfer tokens from one account to another in order to boost their chances of creating new blocks. Tokens affect the ability to create blocks only after 24 hours have passed since they were credited (i.e. 1440 blocks have been created).
• A transaction is considered safe after it has received 10 confirmations (10 minutes). Thus, an attacker would have to generate 10 consecutive new blocks and simultaneously have an enormous account balance. This situation is likely only if the attacker already possesses more than 90% of all funds in the network, which is virtually impossible.
• The SPARTA network is inherently protected from 51% attacks thanks to its use of the Proof-of-Stake concept. Unlike cryptocurrencies that use Proof-of-Work, an attacker cannot create longer chains by out-computing other users in the network.
• Attackers cannot resort to Nothing-at-Stake attacks, because the SPARTA network only allows the last 720 blocks of the chain to be altered. Any block placed below this threshold is automatically rejected.

What is a digital signature and where does it come from?

Each transaction contains a unique digital signature that confirms that the transfer was made specifically by the sender, not someone else.

The digital signature is generated from the private key which belongs to the owner of SPA coins and invisible for anyone. The signature is encrypted and attached to the transaction. It is a proof the the transaction is valid and was created specially by the sender.

• It is impossible to counterfeit the digital signature if one doesn't know the private key.
• The private key is generated from a mnemonic phrase which only you know.
• All information uses the cryptographically secure SHA 256 hash algorithm, therefore the digital signature or private key cannot be counterfeited without a mnemonic phrase. This is why it is crucially important to keep it in secret.

As all you need to check the validity of a transaction is its digital signature, all transactions are anonymous More accurate to say they are pseudonymous.

The recipient and the SPARTA network can see only the address of the public key but it is not known who the address belongs to. For instance, Mark sent 1,000 SPA to Lesly. The network shows only their addresses — a set of letters and numbers. No one can see that the sender’s name is Mark or the recipient is Lesly.

What is the fee in the SPARTA network charged for?

Each transaction in the SPARTA network requires a fee. But compared to bank and other cryptocurrencies commissions, it is the lowest.

The fee is required solely to protect the network from DDoS attacks, unlike in Bitcoin, for example, where the fee serves as a means for miners to generate profit.

Take, for example, Steve, a malicious network user:

• Steve has two addresses in the SPARTA network and transfers coins between them back and forth.

Mempool and transaction processing
 
The mempool is a holding area for all the pending transactions that are awaiting approval by a cryptocurrency miner. It is a kind of center accumulating all unconfirmed transactions and arranging which of them will get confirmed first and which one will be the next.
 
How it works
 
All nodes in the network have a different capacity to store unconfirmed transactions. Every new transaction is automatically added to the mempool, where it awaits confirmations from miners Once cryptocurrency miner picks it up and includes it in the next block, the transaction gets confirmed and leaves the mempool for its final destination.
                                                                                                                      
If the network is not overloaded miners confirm transactions in the order they are registered. It doesn't take much time. But when the mempool is overloaded, miners will include a transaction with a high fee rather than a transaction with a much lower fee.  It turned out to be a big problem for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at the end of the last year, when Bitcoin transaction fee reached a high of around $40.
 
Why did it happen? The surge in fees was a matter of bitcoin's price growth in 2017 which caused the overload of the network.  The demand for cryptocurrencies was so high that the networks couldn't cope with the overload.

What is Halving in the Cryptocurrency Network?
 
Miners are rewarded with newly created coins for network support and maintenance. Coins are awarded to the miner who creates the block. The reward is fixed — miners earn a certain amount of coins for each created block.  In the SPARTA network, this amount currently equals 8,000 coins per block.
 
However, to protect the network against inflation, the amount of coins released is cut precisely in half over time.  It also means that the reward miners receive for block generation also falls by 50%.  This process is dubbed “halving”.
 
Halving in Bitcoin and SPARTA
 
Thus, the bitcoin network has already experienced two halving events — in 2012 and 2016.   Initially, miners were paid 50 BTC per block, but in 2012 this amount went down to 25 BTC, and in 2016 — to 12.5 BTC.  The next halving event in the bitcoin network is scheduled for 2020 when the reward drops to 6.25 BTC.
 
However, the ever-growing price of bitcoin keeps miners' earnings high, despite halving.  Halving is largely responsible for the rising price since less new coins are released into circulation, thus becoming more valuable. 
 
 The SPARTA network will use halving, too.  The first halving event will happen after 4 bln coins are mined.  The second halving event will follow mining of 6 bln coins.  Currently, the number of SPA coins is a little over 2 bln.

What is UTXO?
 
UTXO stands for unspent transaction “outputs” in the blockchain.
 
These include:

• Amounts sent to and residing in an account;
• Miner fees;
• Change sent back to the sender's account and making up the wallet balance.

These “outputs” are indivisible cryptocurrency amounts that are linked to a certain owner, recorded in the blockchain ledger and recognized as currency across the network. Each of them is made up of two components: amount and conditions to be met in order to spend this amount in the future.
 
Each time a user makes a transfer, the sent or received amount is recorded in the blockchain ledger as UTXO. It means that a user may have coins residing in various transactions and blocks. In this case the concept of wallet or account balance is not used — there exist only separate UTXO's linked to addresses of specific users. To calculate balance on a user account, the network always scans the blockchain ledger and retrieves all UTXO's owned by this user.

A story of a British man who threw away $18 million
 
Many people don't take some things seriously and don't believe in their potential which can become their biggest regret in the future. Millions of dollars is the price a British man had to pay for his negligence.
 
Back in 2009, a British IT worker, named James Howells, began mining bitcoin on his personal laptop. He successfully mined 7,500 coins but didn't give them much thought. In fact, he didn't believe in a high potential of bitcoin. What else could explain his unfortunate carelessness when he threw away a hard drive containing all the coins mined.
 
That's how it happened
 
Howells had to stop mining when his girlfriend complained about the noise from the laptop and the heat it was producing. He even couldn't imagine that he had already made a fortune by that time.
 
Had he known he could have lived his normal life, forgotten about the coins, and recalled that he owned them only when the value of bitcoin soared. Then he would have become a millionaire.  But once James spilled lemonade on the laptop and dismantled it for parts. Then, cleaning up the drawer, he put the hard drive into the bin.
 
When bitcoin's value skyrocketed to more than $8,000, he realized that had thrown away $18 million. To get access to his coins, Howells needed the cryptographic "private key" that was in the lost hard drive.  Without it, the money is lost forever.  Unfortunately, Howells didn't have a backup...
 
The only thing he could do was to dig up the landfill in order to find the lost hard drive.
 
He tried to get permission from the local council to search for the lost hard drive. Although the council didn't allow it, Howells didn't lose hope. Since 2017 he together with a group of diggers have been trying to find his lost fortune. He has also set up a Bitcoin wallet for donations aimed at recovering the hard drive. As you may guess, the search has failed.
 
All we can do is to wish James Howells good luck and strongly recommend you to back up your wallet data so that you accidentally wouldn't lose access to your wallet forever.

Unlike Bitcoin, which uses the Proof-of-Work (PoW) concept, SPARTA is based on Proof-of-Stake (PoS). Under the PoW concept, mining requires huge electricity consumption. With SPARTA, no energy is wasted so it can be called an environmentally friendly cryptocurrency.

Examples of bitcoin energy consumption:

• Back in 2013, the entire bitcoin network was roughly 256 times faster than all the top 500 supercomputers around the globe combined.

Proof-of-Stake mining is more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than Proof-of-Work.

In one of our previous publications, we looked at the problem of environmental disaster caused by the PoW-mining “craze”. In this post, we'd like to give you some numbers regarding power consumption by Bitcoin — for illustration purposes and a fuller understanding of the scale of the problem.
 
The Bitcoin network is currently consuming 2.55 GW of electric power on a monthly basis!
 
It's a huge number, but it's not the limit. With each passing day, more and more users join the network, so the amount of power consumed grows respectively. According to experts, this number could surge by over three times in the near future — up to 7.67 GW.
 
For reference: all of Iceland consumes 3.1 GW per month, and Austria consumes 8.2 GW.
 
We will now compare the amount of power consumed by Bitcoin transactions and that consumed by the traditional payment systems.
 
Power consumption for a single Bitcoin transaction is 20 thousand times more than that for a single transaction in the Visa payment system which is a mere 0.01 kW (10 W). Almost all cryptocurrencies using the PoS technology offer an advantage to the nodes with a bigger balance when generating blocks. Assume a node has a balance of 2,000 coins while another node has a balance of 3,000 — the node with 3,000 coins on the balance will have a chance to generate a block more often. What if it's 100,000 coins? In this case nodes with a balance of 2,000 will almost never generate blocks while the node with 100,000 will generate block very often.
 
Therefore, nodes with a bigger  balance could come to dominate the market one day which is an obvious sign of centralization. What if they form pools? Wanting to gain an advantage, malicious users might deliberately accumulate a big balance for their nodes, unite with others and concentrate most coins in their hands, thus having a huge influence on the cryptocurrency market.
 
All nodes are equal in the SPARTA network!
 
Although SPARTA also uses the PoS technology, its algorithm is designed to even the odds of generating blocks for all nodes with a balance of at least 1,000,000 SPA. Even if a node has a balance of 200,000,000 SPA, it will generate blocks just as often as a node with a balance of 1,000,000 SPA.

This is why many miners unite to make up the so-called mining pools — they pool their hashrates together and increase the odds of generating new blocks.
 
This is the factor that makes the 51% attack real. Here are some real examples:

• In July 2014, the mining pool Ghash.io took possession of 55% of Bitcoin's hashrate and was able to run the attack. However, miners demonstrated honesty and loyalty to Bitcoin — they voluntarily reduced their respective hashrates and undertook to control these values and limit them to 40% at the most.
• In August 2016, blockchains of Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies Krypton and Shift suffered the 51% attack. Fraudsters ran a double spending transaction with these cryptocurrencies on the Bittrex exchange and stole about 22,000 coins from both networks.

The truth is there have been a lot more practical examples.

51% Attack on Other Cryptocurrencies Revisited: Is It Expensive? Not really
 
Husam Abboud, a researcher from a Brazilian university FECAP, has come up with an original method to calculate the price of a 51% attack — Rindex v2.0. Here're the results of his study:

• A successful attack on the Ethereum Classic blockchain would only cost $1.5 mln. To drive this cryptocurrency to complete bankruptcy, scammers would need to invest $55 mln in the attack, but it would allow them to earn $1 bln, thus making up for their investment by a large margin.
• A 51% attack on the Bitcoin Cash network would cost 250 BTC ($1,875,000) per day, on the Bitcoin Gold network — only 26 BTC ($200,000) which is almost ten times cheaper. Scammers can continue with the attack until developers release a fix or until the cryptocurrency price goes down to a level which is low enough to make the attack useless. In this case, cryptocurrency may sustain a lot of damage.

It's worth noting that Abboud's calculation never accounted for mining equipment and electricity costs since scammers don't have to pay for this — they can just rent computing power.
 
For instance, if miners who control as little as 2.5% of the Ethereum network hash rate simply switch over to the Ethereum Classic network, they will find themselves in control of 51% of the network's computing power. In this case, the daily price of an attack will be equivalent to the reward underreceived by the miners and amounting to about 525 ETH.

Hackers will never be able to access your wallet without knowing the phrase. Therefore, you should note it down on a sheet of paper and store it somewhere safe or, still better, memorize it.
 
You must make sure you store the entire phrase: no words from the phrase must be seen by those interested, not even as a nonsensical collection of words containing words added by you.
 
For your convenience, you can also store your phrase on a sheet of paper, a separate medium or a computer with no Internet access, for hackers to be unable to access it. You must also make sure you store at least one copy of your mnemonic phrase so that you could access your wallet if you lose the physical medium, the sheet of paper, etc. To maximize security, you must also memorize the phrase.
