What would you say the fastest, smallest distributed ledgers are? How do they gain those advantages?
Proper answer is: It depends. If you have only a couple of nodes and they can be trusted, a system like Paxos or other 'classical' Byzantine Consensus algorithms are probably a lot faster.
But if you have a lot of nodes, or a large group of nodes might be untrustworthy, these will not perform as well.
