This is a forum related question not an alt discussion.
Starting out with a disclaimer I own BTC and LTC and think ripple is a scam.

If we see that another crypto currency, such as LTC, really catches on, will the forum continue to regulate it to the alt section or can we use the current infrastructure to discuss these issues. I feel that dividing the crypto community among different forums id plain stupid. we dont need an LTC forum and a ripple forum. Everyone is here, along with their ratings and rep.

Could mods please consider turning this into a crypto forum rather than a bitcoin forum, if and when a time comes when this is neccesary?

BIG WINNER!

No, mods do not make this decision.

That said, this is bitcointalk.org not cryptotalk.org, so I find your proposal extremely hard, if not impossible to realize here. We're having enough problems with the next *coin popping up to pump and dump the poor newbies now.

That's not to say that we can't have talk of REAL cryptos in the main board...

How do you define 'real' cryptos then?

ShitCoinv2 has changed more than Litecoin. Remember, Litecoin was a 5 line or so change from Tenebrix or whatever.

I consider PPCoin to be a "real" coin, so does Namecoin, whatever, but what if they're excluded?

You are going to have a cut off line through. Why should some arbitrary criteria decide what's "real" and what is "scam"?

Best solution would be.. bitcointalk.

If a coin gets "established" I think a subboard in the Alt. Coin Section for this coin would be fair I think.

But so far, there isn't enough "talk" going on about any of them (Litecoin too) that would justify this.

Just look at the Altcoin Bard. There isn't very much discussion going on about Litecoin. When there are at least 10 really active Litecoin threads about different Topics, then it would make sense to think about a Litcoin Subboard in the Alternate cryptocurrencies Board.

For the rest. This is Bitcointalk + allowing one Alt out of the alt section would either be a free pass for all of them or would result in endless discussions.

All previous versions of currency will no longer be supported as of this update

Although I am a bitcoin truly believer...

I think it is time to accept other ALT coins...

Some alt coins really do make bitcoin STAND OUT... and FAMOUS...

We already have 'Alternate cryptocurrencies' - people seem to be making out it's a huge leap to add a sub-forum for Litecoin or any other currency that warrants it. It's really not.

It is actually, because it's an official endorsement unless there are 400 subforums added for any coin.

In a community this size, especially a religious one with people being fanboys of their favorite cryptocoin they were early adopters of, you will piss people off if you set a criteria. The better solution would be to not set it in the first place, and again, this is bitcointalk, not cryptocurrencytalk.

By that logic, having 'Alternate cryptocurrencies' is already an endorsement.

Would you like to see the subforum removed completely since, as you say, "this is bitcointalk, not cryptocurrencytalk"?

So what if you piss people off? Not doing anything, or banning alt coin talk, is going to piss more people off.

Why would rational people be pissed that BITCOINtalk.org is about BITCOIN.  IF another currency becomes large enough to be a "real boy" per whatever arbitrary definitions you see fit wouldn't it be large enough to support an independent forum "xyzcointalk.org"?

It's not an endorsement of a specific alt coin. It would be like if in the securities section, there was an ASICMINER subboard.

The altcoin fourm is a compromise much like "off topic" is.  Really neither is necessary however without them some people simply don't follow the rules and that makes the jobs of the mods difficult.

Why should there be anything done. It is Bitcointalk.

If there would be enough talk about one coin over a longer period of time to justify it's own subboard, I f.e. would be OK that it gets its own subboard (in alternate crypto), there just isn't anything going on with LTC except waiting for it to increase in Value. There are currently 0 real LTC Discussions / Threads (except giveaways and speculation).

IMO, if LTC or any other ever reaches the point where there is a broad enough user base with discussion to justify it's own board it could have one and we could see where it goes from there. But so far there isn't.

And just in case, discussions not spam single post threads.

This is Bitcointalk.org, where we talk about bitcoins. If you want to make a cryptocointalk.org nobody here is stopping you. Maybe you could get with MatthewNWright, he is always complaining about the forum and wants to make a new one.

So there is demand from members of this forum to talk about alt-currencies.

You frame it as off-topic discussion, but is it really?

This forum introduced me to all of the alt-currencies I know of; I didn't find out about them any other way.

If certain criteria can be agreed, what harm is there in adding a sub-forum for leading alt-coins?

Certain criteria cannot be agreed. You need to understand that whatever criteria there is, it will encourage certain kinds of behavior.

Age?
Simple, people will rush to announce as much coins as earliest they can, leading to buggy and crashing code.

Hashpower?
Coin will be focused on early mining to push it over whatever criteria was set. Early adopter's heaven.

Oh and this is forgetting coins without mining won't ever get a board? What about pure PoS coins? What about ripple? what about proof of movement coins?

I don't really want to get into how difficult or otherwise it is to set the criteria for alt-coin sub-forums, as I don't think this is the reason  people are being hostile towards the idea.

But, coin age would be a very easy one - I can't imagine loads of people rushing to release coins in the expectation that they might get a sub-forum one or two years later.
