Why the e-Franc/e-Frank?

Our philosophy

We, the founders of the Belgian e-Franc (BEF), are from the last generation that grew up with the Belgian Franc. For us, the Belgian Franc brings up a sense of nostalgia and pride. We can remember very well how we got 100 BEF from our parents to go to the fair and buy some real Belgian fair-fries! In short, we want to bring back this coin in all its former glory, but backed with new technology based on the Cryptonote blockchain. We see digital money as the future. We experience that a lot of Belgian people do not feel any relation to Bitcoin or other popular cryptocurrencies, however we do see that they have a strong tie with the Belgian Franc, hence, the e-Franc.

Mobile App

At the core of the Belgian e-Franc will be a mobile app for iOS and Android which is currently in testing for a selected audience. The core features will be sending/receiving e-Francs and also earning them through an embedded miner, supporting the strength of the network.

Wallets for for every major OS

The e-Franc team will provide an open-source Ionic/Electron wallet app that will run on any major OS such as Windows, Ubuntu (Linux) or OSX.




Who is this coin for?

The e-Franc is primarily aimed at people from Belgium, a small country in Europe with a 11.3M population. The supported languages for the mobile app are for this reason English, French and Dutch. If the coin gains international traction, translations will be foreseen for other languages.

Local initiatives

Talks are ongoing with local initiatives to introduce this e-Frank as an actual currency supporting local micro-economies. For example, purchasing real-world items such as Belgian fries and waffles. Our main focus will be on drawing publicity to the new coin by such bringing such activities in the Belgian news media. We are also closely working together with other initiatives to make renting bikes possible in large cities such as Antwerp and Brussels with e-Francs.




Technical details

Technology: Cryptonote
Algorithm: Cryptonight

Motivation: The Belgian people strongly values privacy with regards to their earnings and spending. Cash money has always played an important role in the Belgian economy. With the e-Franc, we want to recreate this experience. In addition to that, we feel that the Belgian people are fair by nature. The egalitarian philosophy of the Cryptonote blockchain is strongly aligned with Belgian democratic thinking: every vote is equal and every vote counts. For this exact reason, and as we experience that cryptocurrencies have not been heavily adopted in Belgium, we want to provide new miners with an equal baseline from the start and not give an unfair advantage to experienced (GPU-equipped) miners with specialized equipment.

Total coins: 403,399,999

Motivation: With the introduction of the Euro, the exchange rate that was held for the Belgian Franc was 40,3399 per Euro. We hope that, with this amount of coins, the long-term equilibrium for the exchange rate of the e-Franc and Euro will be at the same level or above the exchange rate from 2001 between the Belgian Franc and the Euro.

Premine: 15%

Motivation: For the ICO, we open up 2/3rd of the premine. The first 5% will be sold at 50% of the target exchange rate price and second 5% will be sold at the 75% exchange rate price. The remaining 5% premine is kept for for further development/maintenance of the coin. This means that the e-Franc team will directly benefit from the coin's success and is therefore intrinsically motivated to make it a success.

We believe that Belgians are always a fan of local initiatives and are more likely to accept something they recognize, such as the Franc, which was replaced by the Euro some years ago.

We experience that in Belgium the Bitcoin is seen as something 'remote'/'foreign', hence the introduction of the e-Franc.
