Probably due him wanting to simply gain power over other sort of authority figures in the bitcoin or blockchain space. I wouldn't be surprised if his main intention was to somewhat manipulate people's thinking.

I would imagine he has a lot to gain if the community were to believe that he is the Satoshi Nakamoto. The man has basically turned into a legend, coming out of nowhere and disappearing without a trace. The cryptocurrency community has a good amount of respect for him, even using his whitepaper as a basis for arguments like Bitcoin Cash supporters. Lots of people want to find Satoshi, and he probably thought he could exploit that.

I personally believe Satoshi can singlehandedly end and stop all these hostile takeovers as people would be much more likely to take his side. He can take Bitcoin wherever he wants to and the community will support him. If Craig Steven Wright could wield this kind of influence, then he could use that to gain fame, fortune, and power. He has since backed off without truly showing relevant evidence, so I would say it's incredibly unlikely.

Rather to profit from it. He is a business man, so he wants more money. If you can patent the original concept, you can charge other people who have used your technologies. This will include all Alt coins that copied his concept. He can even demand royalties for the businesses that built their business model around it.

I think he is a very greedy person. He claimed "satoshi nakamoto" as name. But Craig Steven we know is businessman and i think it is a move for thei to try control the bitcoin. The only reason I can think of is he wants to people to talk about him. Since we all know that there's no way Satoshi will come forward and expose himself, Craig seize the opportunity and claimed the throne even though no one will believe him. I think that his action was purely for the sake of popularity and greed. Unless he can prove that he's Satoshi (and I doubt he can) only then people will believe him and maybe thank him for the wonders that he contributed in the world of cryptocurrencies.

My guess is that his intentions were to get more power and popularity among Bitcoin users...maybe he have political ambitions as well.
Yet he was very naive to claim he's Satoshi Nakamoto. He was so naive to believe people would have trusted him, with no proof. Instead people asked for proofs and, since he's not Satoshi, he couldn't provide any proof. He just acted like a fool. It would be better for him if he would not have done such a stupid thing! His reputation is lost among almost any serious Bitcoiners out there...
