I think we are at that point where we should stop calling it altcoins because most of them are getting momentum and we should understand that they have their own philosophy of executing a decentralized payment system. When it comes to the Bitcoin, I think a strong user base, first mover advantage, and strong price on the market makes it different from the altcoins. However, we have to work on the issues like high confirmation time and high transaction fees.

What make bitcoin the giant of all other cryptocurrencies is simply the fact that bitcoin is the pioneer crypto it was bitcoin first before the coming of other alt coins, and also the price of all other cryptocurrencies depends on bitcoin because bitcoin is the foundation to their success in the cryptocurrencies world and market. None other cryptocurrencies can compete with bitcoin in term's of technology, value, capacity, and potentiality all this is what makes bitcoin the king of cryptocurrencies.

It is not only by the current price of Bitcoin we should use to compare the success of Bitcoin over other altcoins. The sum total of market cap of all altcoins is more than Bitcoin. That is the level of success altcoins have amassed. Individually though Bitcoin is way ahead of others yet altcoins have stamped it's self in the cryptoecosystem.

Altcoins does look like it supports the success of bitcoin, but it certainly not because altcoins.. bitcoin reaches the highest or more desirable value of many people, it's because bitcoin is the first crypto coin that was created with the support of technology advances first. On its popularity as well as its expansion that extends to a various directions supported by many parties/many people, it certainly causes bitcoin remain the leader of all altcoins.
I think the one of the things that can makes bitcoin more success.. that's if the more countries are legalizing bitcoin as a legitimate currency, so of course it can makes the development of bitcoin become more popular and more desirable among many people.

Can we expect altcoins to reach the success of Bitcoin? and how long would it take? what are success metrics?

First of all bitcoin is first coin and it has its own place, so it will be difficult for altcoins to replace it, for second, bitcoin is decentralized, and it any other coins can reach the same level of decentralization, they will also be popular.

Bitcoin is very different! But this is a good question, I do not think most people understand the basics, but its always great to ask questions and learn! Bitcoin is the first use of whats called "the blockchain" it is also a currency, but not all crypto assets are currencies! I think these illustrated guides written in basic English will help you A TON. They will explain everything from an entry level so its easy to understand. =)

actually the difference between bitcoin and altcoin is not much different. only, bitcoin is the first crypto with agoritma technology. and the most important factor, bitcoin no one can control it. this is why bitcoin values are very volatile. for altcoin, certainly not easy. even difficult to compete with bitcoin. but if you can find a gap to get every profit, it can make you rich.

Well, Bitcoin is the first decentralized digital currency so it is hard to put down and replace the father of cryptocurrencies. But I have the feeling that it will be replaced at the top soon if no ugrades happening.

The main credit of bitcoin is that, it was the pioneer in decentralized revolution. So people first came to know about bitcoin and then they came to know about the altcoins. That's the main thing that made bitcoin different from any other currency. Today we have more advanced and technologically superior currencies in the market than bitcoin, but that couldn't bring down the acceptability of bitcoin in any way. People started with bitcoin and then diversified in to other currencies. Nothing else makes bitcoin different than altcoins.
People are driven to used trusted things for them to start a new thing for them. I think people who want to get into cryptocurrency much trust bitcoin more compare to any other form of cryptocurrency because if we are going to look at the history of bitcoin in terms of its value and its stock movement and development in the market. We could see that bitcoin is much more developed and stable to used in the form of investment and transaction in cryptocurrency.

I think the main thing is that people invested in cryptos are knowledgable about alts. The majority only talk about Bitcoin.

We all have seen a huge drop in cryptos over the last few weeks but the media only talks about Bitcoin.

You could argue ripple overtook bitcoins market cap if you take into consideration total supply.

I think, Basically, altcoin is created to co-exist with bitcoin. Bitcoin plays the most important role in cryptocurrency.
If likened to metal, altcoin is like a plain metal that can be exchanged with a precious metal called bitcoin.

Bitcoin is not that much different from alt coins but there were some difference regarding these two things that exists here in crypto. Bitcoin is the main cryptocurrency for it was the first created digital currency and altcoins are just an alternative for bitcon. For example, you don't want to invest in bitcoin, there goes altcoins in which you can invest.

If there's an alt the can possible top bitcoin I think it would be Ethereum, not only he is on the 2nd ranking with market capacity but also because of its usability and smart contract.

Can we expect altcoins to reach the success of Bitcoin? and how long would it take? what are success metrics?

There is always a possibility that an altcoin would be able to reach what bitcoin has achieved. Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency that's why it is the most famous and it has the highest price. Most of the trades make bitcoin as base price as many platforms or merchants perhaps only accept bitcoin. There is no exact time frame as to when a certain coin would be able to surpass the market capitalization of bitcoin and in terms of price, it may take a long time. Let's admit there are better fee and technology that are already made compared to bitcoin but still bitcoin remains at the top because many people still believe in it.

Cryptocurrencies mostly depend on demand and popularity.
Bitcoin is the most popular and the most demandable crypto, so main difference is power of bitcoin.

Altcoins is a short term investment. It may goes up its price but its not long term. When it goes up, after that the price will go down and will never be go up again. While bitcoin is a long term investment. When the price or value goes down, it may be goes up again not as the same of altcoins. That is my observation of the difference between altcoin and bitcoin.
