in my opinion,steem is good. I suggest that you give it a try. u have to do your own research to find a project you feel confident with.
But with some Top 10 coins u cant do much wrong

You should always look top 100 coins in the coinsmarketcap website after that you should select some 5-10 coin from top 100 and do some research about those coins. My suggestion for best altcoins are:- DeepOnion, Power, Ethereum and Dash.

I think that the decision should be entirely yours. If you want to play it safe and not gamble your bitcoins, then you should invest in large cap coins which are cheap now; for eg- waves, etc, eth or zcash. If you are ready to take a risk look at low cap coins such as opus, blackmoon crypto or msp.
