I'm on another forum, http://www.drumforum.org/, and if you notice right on the top, they have a site-wide chat (or "shoutbox"). I think it could be a rather useful addition, and it could also provide an area for quick chit-chat. I'm no coder, so perhaps someone here and a few Admins could make it happen!

Shoutboxes are about as entertaining as contracting AIDS and dying a slow, painful death.

We have one at bitcoinforums.net.  Some people hate 'em (see above poster), but I like having that as an option.  Sometimes, it's useful to just chat, instead of replying over and over in private messages or forum posts.

While they could be useful - this is the internet. It'll be spammed with ASCII dicks and goatse from the second it is put on the site - till the second it's removed.

Puts extra pressure on moderators - and having modded a few forums in the past, if I could afk most of my job, I'd be a lot happier.

Sure - but I'm more interested in catering to the users of the forum than catering to the moderators.  If they don't like the job, they don't have to be moderators.  I've not had a problem with such policies on other forums I run.
