Faint Burning Smell

I added a fourth GPU. A Evga 1070 ti to my rig with 3 1070s. Everything works fine and i had 4 cards in it before running fine just decided to replace one with a 1070ti and was running great for 3 hours but there is a faint burning smell but I can’t pinpoint it. Nothing seemed off. The only thing wrong on my rig is one of the slide locks on my mint cell risers snapped off in an incident weeks ago but the card is fully inserted and functioning fine. I’m not sure if the smell is due to the heat they are putting off or what it could be. To ensure my wife can sleep tonight I turned the rig off and will troubleshoot again tomorrow but don’t know where else to check or how to check if everything is working fine. Any thoughts?

I’d imagine that your at the limit of your psu.  That smell is the capacitors about ready to burst or have done so already.  Also one other place to look is right at the 6 pin connectors. Touch them and see if they feel hot. If it’s hot enough to make that smell it’s melting the coating off right near the 6 pin. I’d suggest adding that last card to another psu.

If your riser is using one which is molex to Sata. Check if the molex side connected to the riser is burned. Very common scenario but not easy to detect. If the state of the burn isnt bad, you card will still run but may have errors few hours later.

try setting tdp lower  

I have 4 evga 1070 ti  hybrid's  I had a faint burnt smell I lowered tdp  to 67%   and the problem went away.

That’s terrifying. It’s the EvGA 1k gold PSU pilling 767 at the wall with everything running.  It was pulling about that with my 4 cards before. I was hoping that isn’t the case. I’m going to try and remove the 1070ti and see if it happens with 3 cards running. Nothing felt hot to touch when I shut it all down

That’s not too close to max.  Maybe is weak psu. I’ve bought cases of psu and have had some act strange at wattages I thought should have been ok. Most times I’d end up burning off the 6 pin back in s3 days. Would try to run one blade off one pcie. It would take a month or so but eventually it cooked the coating off the wires. I’ve def had my fair share of luck that I hadn’t burnt the place down.  Had some close calls with an s4 that shot fire out of psu. Turns out bitmain didn’t factor that USA is on 110 for the most part and it couldn’t handle the extra amperage.

As Phil suggests turning down tdp would work but that only means your possibly overloading the psu.  Or some component. Either the riser or the card itself.  Keep an eye on it and keep combustibles about ten feet from it.  There’s not much that can burn on these and usually once you get to that point the psu shorts and kills everything.

Show us your miner screenshot (EWBF allows to show power consumption) MSI Gaming X series cards have redundant consumption at 100% TDP (I've only 1 of them (GTX1070) and run it at 67% TDP - 140W 470Sol/s). So limit TDP of your cards to 70%) and what is your PSU? what model? Burning smell is not good. Check all your connectors

I was running all my cards at 70 TDP with issues prior to this change.  Had 4 1070s. I went down the 3 for a week and then got the 1070 ti yesterday.  Only update I did was updating to the new version of afterburner. I set the ti to 75% power and monitored the wattage soon as I started it. Never went higher than 780. It ran for about 3 hours when my wife said she smelled a burning smell. Being congested I couldn’t really tell but tried again this morning same issue.  Everything runs fine but I’m not okay with a burning smell. Trying to remove 1070 ti today. Then I’ll swap out the damage riser (slide lock broke off) and hopefully one of those two fixes something.

And you definitely shouldn't be, burning smell is not ok at all. If it's not the card itself (not likely since the hashrate is not affected), then it's probably the cables/connectors on the risers. If a card takes a lot of power through the pci-e slot then some riser' connectors might get too hot. QC is not that great with risers. More likely to happen with sata connectors/cables.

Disconnected the 1070ti from the riser and smell seems to have vanished. Odd because I have always had a card plugged into that riser. I guess next step is to put the 1070ti directly on the board and put th 1070 on the riser in question and see what happens. Or swap that riser out

Just swap that riser if you have another one laying around. If it's the riser that causes the burning smell then it can damage the card so I'd start with swapping it out.

How many pci raisers are you powering with one cable from the PSU? It could also be the card but thats definitely weird.
New cards can have their own distinct smell "that new hardware smell" but that's a rather pleasant smell

3 cards on a riser one on the MOBO.  I was hoping the smell was the new card smell but it doesn’t smell to good. It’s a faint burning smell nothing awful but makes me uncomfortable.

RealSwissMiner was asking you how you power your risers, like which power connectors, which cables from the PSU etc. Sometimes people power multiple risers with one cable from the PSU, and that might cause problems, especially if the card takes a lot of power through pci-e slot.

I see one riser powered by the 6-pin black pci-e cable from the PSU, but can't see how other risers are powered. Are they all sitting on different cables from the PSU, or do they (some of them) share one cable? The point is, each riser should ideally be powered by a separate cable from the PSU.

Then the riser is the main suspect. By the way, I would put the cards more apart if possible. Not connected to the burning smell, but still with only 4 cards it's not necessary to keep them so close together, you could get them run a little bit cooler if they weren't so close to each other.

Riser swap will happen tonight for sure. I just don’t have the space to mount them further apart yet.  Changing my whole setup after the holidays. Just trying to find the right stand to use.

i hope for your sake and the risers that you arent running them with that thin fucking insulation bolted on to the hdd cage. that is an electrical short waiting to happen.

First off add some extra insulation to your riser circuit board (cut out the black foam that came with your video card and add it to the bottom of the existing insulation.

As a long term solution (not sure why you need aluminum frame) but if you want to save cost go to home depot and make a frame out of this stuff. Total cost is $7.50 and all you need is a paper cutter, packing tape, zip ties (to secure the gpu to the foam frame) and glue.
