My client is, for the past few weeks, taking a really long time to get connected to the network. Is there any way I can fix this?

Argumentum ad lunam: the fallacy that because Bitcoin's price is rising really fast the currency must be a speculative bubble and/or Ponzi scheme.

Try using google DNS (8.8.8.Cool or http://www.opendns.com/. This already worked for other people.
