I have always been curious about how many people own bitcoin today.

According to this website https://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html , there are a total of 22,589,254 wallet addresses.

This is a good starting point but I made a little count for myself, I have 3 wallets on 2 different computers and 4 other on 4 different exchanges so a total of 7 bitcoin addresses (not counting that you can have many addresses in the same wallet). I guess a lot of people have only one address but I don't think I am the only one that have multiple wallets.

If we make an average of 2 wallet addresses per person, it would mean that only 11,000,000 people have bought bitcoin so far...

I would like to know how many wallets do you have so I can make a better estimate.

Thanks!

I like that you're trying to poll the crowd, keep it up!

However there is a great source of this kind of information from blockchain.info.

There's a lot of great bitcoin supply, transaction, and general market data for you to pore over and think about. Alas, they can't estimate the number of wallets open, but you're picking up the torch where they've had to set it down.

Please share your results with us so we can learn from your findings, ok? Thanks!

There really is no such thing as a "wallet address". Most wallets will store bitcoins in multiple addresses.

Furthermore, an exchange generally does not store each customer's bitcoins in a unique address.

Personally I used :
  • Online wallet named blockchain, it's easy to send btc to people ,everywhere and anytime. I've been use it over 3 years and never occur any problem !
  • Offline wallet named electrum, the feature is easy to understand and complete feature. The security is highly recommend so for secure offline wallet, electrum is the best wallet

Or you can use exchanger as your wallet but I do not recommend because you are not own the private key

Since most of us are probably using HD wallets, the address constantly changes (after every transfer), so technically you could say that an active user has hundreds or thousands of addresses. Counting them is not a relevant indication for anything. Counting unique users, now that would be interesting, but that's not something you can learn from the blockchain (you need actual statistical polling for that).

I also use Electrum, I personaly think it is the best wallet (after trying Armory and Exodus)....It's easy to use, you can change the fees, you have your private keys, its perfect Smiley

Since the wallet addresses are now turns to dynamic address. Henceforth having two address for each and all not at all working anf dynamic address for the security reasons and to bring anonymous in the transaction.
If want count the number of users in the forum or bitcoiners you will not be able to do that because too many alts in every place.

it is an impossible thing to do because all you can see is what the blockchain gives you which is the transaction outputs and with it you can say which address has how much. but an address is not a wallet belonging to one person.
I may have used thousands of addresses and have at least a dozen with some balance in it, like small amounts in change addresses and things like that.

additionally you say you want to know how many people have bought bitcoin, in this case many may buy bitcoin but keep it on exchanges, many are using services like coinbase and xapo to hold their coins (none of these methods are good by the way). when they do that, you can't see them on the blockchain.

If we make an average of 2 wallet addresses per person, it would mean that only 11,000,000 people have bought bitcoin so far...

there are 18,889,321 wallet accounts created on blockchain.info alone!

I think the bitcoin supply is almost reach now well, we don't know how many people using multiple wallets the way they secure their bitcoin but almost 1/3 of bitcoin supply is already bought.

Counting wallet addresses make little sense, there may be tens and even hundreds of them in each wallet. Personally, I've used the full Bitcoin Core client, then moved to Electrum and in August created a new wallet to move BTC and claim Bitcoin Cash. So three wallets with several addresses each, and two of the wallets are now empty (and will always be).

Well, I have 5 bitcoin wallet addresses. According to that statistic, it's impossible for so many people to hold bitcoins, and some people are likely to have more than a dozen wallets, especially some big miners and people who do short-term deals
