So I saw in an auction thread that someone is selling a batch of Avalon Chips. These are just the raw silicon to build a custom miner, right? In other words, they still need a bunch of electronics to make them work practically.

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Avalon chips are great if you can get them without being scammed.
