They are taking advantage of austerity to appeal to the worse tendencies of some people to break the unity of Europe.
The EU is an imperfect organisation but the UK is far more influential and affluent inside it rather than jeering from the sidelines.

Even if this is true, which i doubt it is. Many of the people in the UK outside of London (and Scotland) feel let down by the EU, and that it only takes, and gives little back, while making bad policy decisions on their behalf which negatively impact them. Most of the UK wanted out of the EU; i know the vote was close, but Brexit was the most prevalent vote across the UK.
