As far as i know scryp is a password-based key derivation function created by Colin Percival, originally for the Tarsnap online backup service. Which is specifically designed to make it costly to perform large-scale custom hardware attacks by requiring large amounts of memory.

The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.
