I am not using Ellectrum and I wouldn't know for sure, but just an off idea: maybe you lost the Internet connection or the price provider is currently down? Don't worry, what is important is that the BTC is still there in the wallet, and as to the Pound equivalent I suggest to reach out to the Ellectrum support.

actually, your post is in the wrong section, it should be on electrum alternative clients section.
but here is the solution.
    Open Tools->Preferences
    Open the Fiat tab
    If the "Show history rates" is ticked, untick it
    Choose anything but not your default(usually BitcoinAverage) as the Source.

This feature is just a tool to make your life easyer.
If you can't get it to work, you can always use preev.com to look up the current conversion rate. It's a bitcoin wallet afterall (not a british pound wallet), the price conversion doesn't really matter from a technical point of view.
